Tottenham are in the midst of a midfield pre season injury crisis as Victor Wanyama is having tests on a knee complaint.

The midfield enforcer felt a worrying twinge in the same knee that sidelined him for four months of last season and it goes from bad to worse with a threadbare squad and it threatens to get worse before it gets better.

Another long term absence for Wanyama would be a massive headache for Mauricio Pochettino and his pre season plans because Spurs are already missing Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele — among their eight losing World Cup semi-finalists who return to training next month.

It leaves us hugely short of midfielders and according to The London Evening Standard (www.standard.co.uk) Moussa Sissoko is primed to step into the breach.

The much maligned Sissoko and Christian Eriksen are the only fit, senior midfielders available to face Barca at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and its looking increasingly likely that he may well be on the team sheet for the visit to his former club Newcastle on August 11th in the season curtain raiser.

Despite the constant flack he receives the Frenchman is unfazed as he has the support of the management team, Sissoko said: “The staff are happy with me so I’ll keep going.”

On his first season at Spurs Sissoko said:“My first season here wasn’t easy,” he said. “I came late, I didn’t have pre-season. But last year I played a lot of games and I did well, like the team. This year is going to be the same. I will try to play more and to do better and better.”
