Daniel Levy is famous for his bargain hunting and gamesmanship in the transfer window but according to the Sunday Mirror (www.mirror.co.uk) his dithering over Jack Grealish’s £20million transfer from Aston Villa seems to have spectacularly backfired and his waiting game for the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international midfielder has blown up in his face.
Levy, renowned for his hard line negotiating skills, gambled on Grealish’s sale price dropping because of Villa’s financial woes — only for the Championship club to be bought. And now those new owners have blocked Grealish’s exit.
Villa’s new owners,Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawaris and American Wes Edens, have a combined wealth of £40billion, making them the third richest owners in English football.
Their investment has prevented Villa from falling into administration and the second of Grealish is no longer a priority.
The news will no doubt infuriate Mauricio Pochettino as his main target could have been acquired and will likely feel let down after the club put in plenty of time convincing the playmaker that his future lay at the new White Hart Lane.
According to the article a Villa source said: “Spurs could have pushed the button on this two weeks ago before the takeover. They didn’t. And now the owners have said that neither he, nor James Chester is going anywhere.
