Ange Postecoglou has brought a very distinctive style of play to Tottenham Hotspur, and his star player, James Maddison has now shared what makes it a successful system.

No one quite expected Ange Postecoglou to be a success at Spurs, at least not so quickly. But the Australian has won everybody over with his amiable personality and his attractive football.

That attacking, brave style of football has earned many plaudits already, and has also helped Tottenham remain unbeaten in the league so far.

The Lilywhites come away from the North London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday with a hard-fought point. A 2-2 draw, with two goals from Heung-min Son, was about a fair result, though Spurs may feel they could have sneaked a win.

One thing Tottenham fans are happy with, however, is the fact their side took the game to Arsenal and went for the win. It’s a far cry from the defensive football we’ve seen in recent years, and it appears to be a method that’s here to stay.

Why does Angeball work so well at Tottenham?

Speaking to Viaplay after the game against Arsenal, James Maddison praised his manager’s approach to the game and explained why the style of play is so effective.

He said: “That’s Ange Postecoglou’s style, he has a very unique style, high pressure, full-backs inside, possession football. And he always says to us that everybody tries to do it but the reason why some fail and others don’t is because of fear.

“When you come to the Emirates it’s easy to just sit back and say ‘you know what let’s not play how we play, let’s just defend,’ but that’s not how he wants his teams to perform and that gives us confidence because we don’t feel any pressure and if we make a mistake it’s his fault, which is the licence that he gives us, which is refreshing.”

Angeball is the way forward, and long may it continue. I’d rather see the team trying bold things and looking to attack, even if it fails. It’s far more admirable, entertaining, and seemingly more effective, than the tactics of the past few managers.
