Jose Mourinho admitted after Tottenham’s win over Southampton on Sunday that he still wants to sign another striker before the transfer window shuts on October 5th (Football.London).
Reports over the past few days have linked the club with Wolfburg striker Wout Weghorst as a potential target (Express), however reports from Germany claim that Spurs have made an approach for Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The striker has reportedly been on Tottenham’s radar for over a year (Daily Mail), with former boss Mauricio Pochettino said to have spoken to the 23-year-old last summer about the possibility of coming to North London (Bild via 90min).
According to Bild (as relayed by Tribal Football), Tottenham have made contact with Mainz to enquire about striker’s asking price.
The report suggests that Spurs face competition with an unnamed German club for Mateta’s signature, with Mainz said to be open to cashing in on him.

Mateta was a hot property last summer with many clubs across Europe reportedly after him but his stock has seemingly fallen considerably on the back of the injury-hit campaign he had last time out. However, the 23-year-old looks to have put his fitness problems behind him as he started this season on fire. Mateta could turn out to be a better signing than someone Wout Weghorst in the long-term but there is potentially more risk involved due to his injury record.
