Bologna defender Aaron Hickey is attracting increasing attention from Premier League clubs, according to Sky Sports.

The report claims that Brentford have become the latest top flight team to set their sights on the left-wing back, who is comfortable on either flank and join Newcastle United who have a long-standing interest in the player.

The Magpies are expected to trigger their option to buy current loanee Matt Targett from Aston Villa at the end of the season for £15m, with Hickey reluctant to see his progress halted by a lack of game time.

Hickey made the move to Serie A from Hearts in September 2020, with his performances catching the eye of AC Milan, although the Scottish international is reported to prefer a move to the Premier League and is tipped to be on the move at the end of the campaign.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is said to be a fan of the wing-back’s attack-minded style and has been gathering more information on the 19-year-old from his Italian contacts.  However, the north Londoners have a ‘watching brief’, rather than being in an advanced stage with their interest.

Tottenham’s options on the left side of defence are considerably better than the right.  If Ryan Sessegnon can stay fit and Real Madrid decide against taking up their option to re-sign Sergio Reguilon this summer, the focus should be on the right instead with the jury still out on Emerson Royal while Matt Doherty has been poor for the majority of his stint at Tottenham.
