While reporting on Atletico Madrid’s pursuit of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, AS have revealed that the Tottenham man wants to play Champions League football next season.
It has been widely reported over the past month and a half that Hojbjerg could be offloaded by Spurs this summer as he is not seen as a particularly good fit for Ange Postecoglou’s possession-based, front-foot football (The Sun).
It was even reported by The Daily Mail a couple of weeks ago that the player, who was attracting interest from the likes of Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, is unsure about extending his current contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which has two years to run.
Hojbjerg wants to move for Champions League
AS have now shed light into why that might be the case, stating that the midfielder is keen on playing Champions League football next season.
The publication states that while Atletico Madrid have several midfielders on their wishlist, Diego Simeone has made it clear to the club’s hierarchy that the Spurs star is his number-one choice.
This is because Hojbjerg is said to ‘stand out’ for his positioning, his ability to cover ground and his quality on the ball.
However, the report adds that the operation would be ‘difficult’ for the La Liga side to do since Tottenham are demanding €45m (£38.5m) for the 27-year-old.
Spurs Web Opinion
If Hojbjerg were fully committed to staying at Tottenham and ready to sign a new contract, I suspect Postecoglou would be happy to keep him around, at least as a squad player.
However, it appears as if the midfielder is exploring other projects, which is why Spurs are now seemingly listening to offers for him.
