According to the print edition of AS (15/07/23 – as relayed by Sport Witness), Atletico Madrid would first have to free up some funds by offloading players before they can push ahead with a move for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
It has been widely reported over the last few weeks that Spurs are willing to listen to offers for Hojbjerg, with Atletico said to be one of the teams keen on signing the midfielder (Daily Mail).
AS have now revealed exactly why the La Liga side are so intent on winning the race for the Tottenham man.
The outlet explains that the club are prioritising signing a midfield pivot to compliment Koke, with Hojbjerg having been identified as the ‘ideal profile’.
It is alleged that Diego Simeone particularly likes the Spurs man since he is of the right age and has the attributes he is looking for, including movement off the ball, and the ability to get forward and contribute in the final third.
The report adds that the Atletico boss also values Hojbjerg’s character highly, which is why he is keen on bringing him to the Spanish capital.
Spurs do not want to sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
However, AS state that the deal will not be easy for the Spanish club to pull off as Tottenham do not particularly want to let the 27-year-old leave and Daniel Levy is seen as a ‘very tough president to crack’ in negotiations.
The publication reveals that while Atletico are still very much in the mix for Hojbjerg, they are now working to secure several exits in order to free up funds to sign the former Southampton man.
Spurs Web Opinion
While it does make sense for Tottenham to listen to offers for Hojbjerg if the Dane is not keen on signing a new contract, I doubt that the Lilywhites could consider any offer of less than £35m for the midfielder.
