According to the print edition of AS (12/08/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s proposed move to Atletico Madrid is being delayed by the Spanish side’s inability to offload their unwanted players.
It was reported weeks ago that Tottenham expect Hojbjerg to be an Atletico player before the transfer window closes, with the North London club already studying various replacements for the Dane (Daily Mail).
However, there has seemingly been no movement in the negotiations since then, with AS now shedding light on why that is the case.
It is explained that despite other midfielders, including Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, being offered to Atletico, the Tottenham man remains Diego Simeone’s ‘desired’ target.
Atletico Madrid are not even close to a Hojbjerg bid
It is revealed that Atletico have made no progress on their pursuit of Hojbjerg and will not be able to bid for the player unless they carry out a few exit operations.
The outlet states that Los Rojiblancos would need to offload at least two players before making a move for the 28-year-old if they are to ensure they do not breach FFP regulations.
The report adds that the former Southampton man is waiting patiently for Atletico to make an offer that ‘seduces’ Spurs.

Atletico’s delay is not good news for Postecoglou, who would want clarity to plan for the season.
Unless Atletico stump up the cash needed to sign Hojbjerg, the Premier League side would not be able to push ahead with a move for someone like Conor Gallagher, who Ange might have identified as a replacement for the Dane.
