The Telegraph have reported that claims Newcastle are clear frontrunners to sign James Maddison are premature, although a deal is slowly progressing.
Newcastle are still apparently facing a battle to agree a fee with Leicester City for the England international, while Financial Fair Play could be a ‘real problem’ for the Magpies in general this summer (Luke Edwards).
Contrasting reports about Maddison and Tottenham
This comes amidst contrasting reports surrounding the attacking midfielder, as Spurs and Newcastle battle it out to win his signature.
Sky Sports reported that Newcastle were leading the race for Maddison, but both Dean Jones and Graeme Bailey claim Tottenham are in ‘pole position’ (Chasing The Transfer).
The Telegraph say that Ange Postecoglou has chosen Maddison as his top summer target, and The Daily Star add that Tottenham had submitted an opening offer of £40m.
Spurs Web Opinion:
I don’t see how Newcastle aren’t heavy favourites here. They are a club on the up, in the Champions League, and doing great business. If Maddison goes there, he could be challenging for the title within three years, if they follow a Man City-type path.
