The Telegraph have revealed that there is a belief at Newcastle United that they are ‘edging closer’ to agreeing a fee with Leicester City for the signing of Tottenham target James Maddison.
Maddison is thought to be one of Tottenham’s priority targets this summer, with The Daily Star even reporting on June 10 that the North London club have launched an offer of £40m for the England international.

It has been well documented that Spurs are battling Newcastle United for the 26-year-old’s signature, with Sky Sports claiming on Monday that the Magpies had moved ahead of the Lilywhites in the pursuit of the Leicester star.
We also subsequently related a report from Chronicle Live on the same day (June 12) which claimed that Eddie Howe’s men will not be pushed into a bidding war for Maddison or to pay beyond their valuation as they have a flexible list of targets.
Newcastle are growing in confidence over Maddison
The Telegraph have now reported that Newcastle have no intention of paying the £60m that Leicester have been asking for the attacking midfielder.
However, the report states that there is a belief among the Magpies hierarchy that they are ‘edging close to reaching a compromise on the fee’ with the Foxes.
It is said that there is ‘growing optimism’ in the North East about the Maddison deal.

If Tottenham are willing to match the fee that Newcastle offer to pay for Maddison (which one would assume the club would if the 26-year-old is Postecoglou’s top target), then the decision would be left with the player.
While the offer of Champions League football in the North East would certainly be lucrative, I would not put it past Postecoglou to be able to convince the midfielder about being one of the spearheads of his project at Spurs.
