Contrary to what has been reported by other outlets over recent days, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has now claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are in the driver’s seat in the race for James Maddison’s signature.
It has been widely reported going back several months that Tottenham are expected to battle Newcastle United for Maddison this summer (Football Insider).
The updates over the last few days have not been positive from a Spurs perspective, with Sky Sports reporting on Monday that the Magpies are in pole position ahead of the Lilywhites in the race for the Leicester City star.
On Wednesday, The Telegraph went a step further and suggested that there is a feeling at Newcastle that they were ‘edging closer’ to agreeing a fee with the Foxes for the attacking midfielder.
The report added that there is a sense of ‘optimism’ in the North East about their pursuit of Maddison.
Good news for Spurs in the James Maddison race
However, Crook has now asserted that much to the surprise of Eddie Howe’s men, the England international prefers a move to London this summer.
The journalist told talkSPORT Breakfast – 14/06, 9:50 am: “I think Newcastle are surprised that they (Spurs) are in the box seat. I am told that Maddison prefers a move to London.
“Obviously, if you go to Newcastle, then you have Champions League football. I am not saying it definitely won’t happen.
“But, at the moment, I would make Tottenham the front-runners. He is a player that Ange Postecoglou believes he could build his re-build around. Again, the stumbling block is the fee.
“I am told that Leicester are looking up to £60m. That’s quite a lot of money for a player who has just been relegated to the Championship.
“I am not sure there is going to be a quick resolution here. He is on Newcastle’s list, for sure, they tried to sign him last summer.”

With contrary reports emerging on a regular basis, Spurs fans should not get their hopes up regarding the Maddison pursuit unless there is concrete evidence that we are leading the race for his signature.
However, it does seem like we will learn sooner rather than later where Maddison is headed as Leicester appear keen to sort out the midfielder’s future swiftly, if some reports are to be believed (Chronicle Live).
