The latest on the situation surrounding James Maddison’s future suggests Leicester City are hoping for a much higher fee than Tottenham and Newcastle are willing to pay, but there is good news for Spurs as the player is thought to prefer a move to London.
Maddison was in fine form yet again in the 2022/23 campaign but was unable to prevent Leicester City from being relegated to the Championship.
The midfielder bagged ten goals and registered nine assists across 32 appearances for the Foxes last season (Transfermarkt).
After another impressive season, and finally breaking through into the England squad, it is widely expected Maddison will leave Leicester this summer in an attempt to remain in the Premier League.
Tottenham have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old for months now. Now, with Ange Postecoglou in charge of the North London side, it has been suggested James Maddison is a top priority in the transfer market (Telegraph).
Newcastle United are also believed to be in the hunt for Maddison (Sky Sports). However, it is Spurs who are thought to have made the first move for Maddison as part of a double bid for the playmaker and his teammate Harvey Barnes (Daily Mail).
Leicester want eye-watering fee for James Maddison
Now, according to The Independent’s Reading the Game newsletter, which was written by journalist Miguel Delaney, it appears Leicester want far more money for Maddison than Spurs were preparing to pay.
Apparently, Leicester are hoping to attract an offer of closer to £80 million for their star man. That is £30 million more than both Tottenham and Newcastle were expecting to pay.
Spurs could have an advantage in the transfer negotiations, however, as it is believed Maddison’s “current preference” is a switch to London, for “family reasons.”
Nevertheless, this preference is “changeable depending on the circumstances.”
Spurs Web Opinion
If we can just agree a fee with Leicester for Maddison, there is a very good chance we can secure the signing of James Maddison.
We should be making tracks on this one immediately as he would be a brilliant player to add to our squad.
