Tottenham Hotspur are thought to have two big advantages over Newcastle United now in the race to sign James Maddison from Leicester City.

Maddison has been in phenomenal form for the Foxes over the last two seasons, but was unable to prevent Leicester from losing their top-flight status last term.

As a star player, and someone who has begun to break into the England set-up, Maddison is widely expected to leave Leicester City this summer and join a Premier League club.

Tottenham are believed to have made the 26-year-old a ‘priority target’ this summer as Ange Postecoglou looks to revamp his squad (Telegraph).

As things stand it appears to be a two-horse race between Spurs and Newcastle United, with the Magpies also thought to be keen to sign the dynamic playmaker (Sky Sports).

Tottenham have advantage in race for Maddison

While Newcastle can offer James Maddison the chance to play in the Champions League, it appears Tottenham have the upper hand in two areas that may well see them secure the player’s signature.

That’s according to the Northern Echo, who claim Tottenham Hotspur can give Maddison the chance to live in London, something he is keen to do.

The North London side may also be able to beat Newcastle when it comes to the salary they can offer Maddison.

The report describes Spurs as “strong favourites” to land Maddison this summer. It is believed the player is “edging towards” the move to the Lilywhites and sees that proposition as his “first choice.”

Maddison is expecting twins with his partner and is expected to make a decision on his future based on “personal and family reasons.”

On top of this, Newcastle United are “reluctant to demolish their current wage structure,” which leaves Tottenham with a chance to give Maddison a more “lucrative weekly wage packet” than he could get with Eddie Howe’s side.

Spurs Web Opinion

All signs are currently pointing towards the fact we may well win this battle, which would be a huge boost for our hopes next season.

Not only is Maddison a quality player, but as our top transfer target, it would be a life for everyone if we could be successful in this pursuit.
