Journalist Michael Bridge has said on Sky Sports (Football Daily) that Newcastle United have identified RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai as a potential alternative for Tottenham target James Maddison.

Over the past couple of days, we have released multiple reports (including from The Guardian and The Daily Mail) which have claimed that Newcastle are focused on getting a deal for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali over the line, which might be a boost to Tottenham’s pursuit of Maddison.

The reports suggested that the route might open up for Spurs to sign the Leicester star, with the Lilywhites backed to make an offer for the 26-year-old.

Newcastle have Maddison back-up plans in place

Bridge has now revealed that Newcastle are on the verge of signing Tonali and are expected to confirm his capture early next week.

The journalist added that while this does not rule out a move for Maddison, the Magpies have also identified other alternatives, one of them being Szoboszlai.

If Newcastle do turn their attention to other alternatives, that would strengthen Tottenham’s negotiating position and perhaps put pressure on Leicester to lower their demands for Maddison.

Unless the Foxes bring their asking price for the 26-year-old down to around £40m, I can see Spurs walking away from the deal.
