Sport have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have completely closed the door on Giovani Lo Celso’s move to Barcelona, with the midfielder now looking set to stay put at the North London club.

Earlier this week, Estadio Deportivo claimed that Lo Celso is unhappy at not being handed any game time by Ange Postecoglou in Tottenham’s first two games of the season, which was denied by sources close to the player in conversations with The Spurs Web.

The publication added that Barcelona had made contact with Lo Celso’s entourage over a possible transfer earlier this summer.

Door closed on Giovani Lo Celso move to Barcelona

Sport have now claimed that barring an ‘unexpected turn’ of events, Lo Celso will not be wearing a Barcelona shirt this season.

This is because Spurs have flat-out refused the Catalan club’s approach for the midfielder, who Xavi Hernandez had identified as a potential target.

The report explains that Barca only made a loan offer for Lo Celso but Tottenham saw ‘no point’ in parting ways with the player without getting any profit in return.

It is alleged that even though the Argentine might not be a regular starter for Spurs, Ange Postecoglou sees him as a ‘useful weapon’ to have in his squad.

Sport add that the situation might have been different if Barca had been willing to pay a transfer fee of around €15m (£12.8m) for the former Real Betis man but that is something the La Liga side cannot afford for the time being.

Spurs Web Opinion

Loaning out Lo Celso was never really on the cards this summer, given that the midfielder only has two years left on his contract. It is clear that the 27-year-old made a very good impression on Ange during pre-season and the Argentine appears happy to stay at Tottenham and fight for his place.
