A new report from Spain has revealed Sevilla have asked Barcelona about the possibility of taking Clement Lenglet on loan this season, as a potential switch to Tottenham Hotspur continues to stall.
Despite being deemed surplus to requirements by Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez at the start of the summer (Sport via Sport Witness), Clement Lenglet is still with the Catalan club as we head into the final week of the transfer window.
The Frenchman spent last season on loan with Tottenham, and it seemed he had done enough to tempt the North London club into making his stay there a permanent one.
According to Sport (print edition 25/07/23 via Sport Witness), Lenglet himself was keen to move to Spurs full-time, despite interest from Marseille.
More recently, it has been suggested that Barcelona have admitted defeat in their attempts to sell the centre-half, and will instead be open to loaning Lenglet out once more (Sport).
Sevilla want Clement Lenglet to return
Whether Spurs intend to sign Lenglet or not remains to be seen, but it has emerged that another option could be on the table for Barcelona, as fellow Spanish outfit Sevilla have registered their interest in borrowing the 28-year-old this year.
That’s according to Marca, who claim Sevilla have “asked about” the potential of reuniting with the player they sold to Barca back in 2018. It is said that the “problem” would be Lenglet’s wage, which Sevilla would be unable to pay “in its entirety.”
Spurs Web Opinion
If we wanted Lenglet, we would surely have signed him weeks ago, so I would say we are firmly out of this race. There are far better options out there for us in this position, if we are just willing to spend the money to make the right investment. It is crucial we don’t settle for a cheap option in defence, as we have seen just how much work that area needs.
