Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has questioned why Dane Scarlett has not yet broken through to play a bigger part in the Tottenham Hotspur first team.
Dane Scarlett is one of the most talented and exciting young players to come through the Spurs academy in recent years. There are high hopes that the 19-year-old could have a similar career trajectory to that of Harry Kane eventually.
Having brushed shoulders with the Tottenham first team over the last two years, it may be rather surprising to know that Scarlett has actually only made ten appearances for the Spurs senior squad so far (Transfermarkt).
The youngster played an important part in the England under-19 squad which won the 2022 European Championships last year. Indeed, Scarlett has arguably had more meaningful game time and success at international level than he has at club level at this stage.
After showing glimpses of what he can do on loan with Portsmouth last season, Scarlett has returned to North London this summer to try and force his way into Ange Postecoglou‘s plans.
There have been conflicting reports on whether Scarlett will be a part of the first-team squad this season, with the Evening Standard suggesting he will be utilised by Postecoglou. However, Postecoglou himself said a decision has not yet been made on that matter (Football.London).
Ferdinand wants to see more of Dane Scarlett
Speaking on the Vibe with Five YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has been wondering why we haven’t seen Dane Scarlett getting more game time for Spurs yet.
He said: “I have been hearing about him for time and he hasn’t come through yet. I have been hearing his name for a long time.”
When asked ‘Is he the new Kane’, Ferdinand added: “No, I don’t know if he’s the new Kane.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We all want to see what Dane Scarlett can do, but it’s worth remembering he is only 19-years-old, and he wasn’t even at the club last season. We are only two games into the season, and I’m sure that if he doesn’t move out on loan, we will see Scarlett featuring for the first team this year
