Tottenham Hotspur are currently monitoring Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate ahead of the new season under Ange Postecoglou, according to the Daily Mail.
Tottenham‘s interest in the 25-year-old, however, may not be straightforward with the report claiming that there are concerns over whether the Japanese international would qualify for a work permit in England.
Hatate joined Celtic in November 2021 as part of a triple signing from Japan’s J League along with Daizen Maeda and Yosuke Ideguchi.
The midfielder only has one international cap to his name having made his debut against Vietnam in a World Cup Qualifier in March of last year and was overlooked for selection in Japan’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar (transfermarkt).
Hatate was however recalled for his country’s upcoming Kirin Challenge Cup upcoming fixtures against El Salvador on 15 June and Peru on 20 June.
Spurs monitoring Hatate as part of Postecoglou’s rebuild
Ange Postecoglou knows all too well about Hatate’s ability having initially seen him in action for Kawasaki Frontale while the 57-year-old was in charge of Yokohama F. Marinos.
Hatate impressed during Celtic’s treble-winning campaign this season where he made 45 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing eleven assists (transfermarkt).
Postecoglou sang the praises of Hatate last October when he told The Scotsman: “I knew what I was getting. He’s a very talented footballer.
“I have tried to explain to people that, people look at his age, but although he’s 24, he’s only really three or four years in professional football and there is more to come from him. He is adapting really well to both life here and football here in Europe and Scotland, more specifically.”
