Tottenham Hotspur youngster Oliver Skipp is pushing for full fitness ahead of the club’s Premier League opener against Southampton on August 6, with Football.London reporting that his injury is nothing more than a knock.
Skipp missed the pre-season friendly against Rangers due to what was described by Football.London as a ‘minor injury’ picked up in training. It’s believed that Skipp’s current issue is not related to his previous pelvic injury which kept him out of action last season.
As Spurs look ahead to their next warm-up match against Roma on Saturday, Alasdair Gold revealed in a Q+A that he expects Skipp to be in contention to face the Italian side. If not, he should be ready for the start of the season proper.
With competition in the squad stronger than ever, particularly in the middle of the park after Yves Bissouma’s arrival, Skipp will have to fight for a place in the starting lineup. Should he be fit though, it will be a major boost for Antonio Conte.
Gold explained: “Oliver Skipp’s injury was just a minor knock to his foot in training on Friday. He could be back for the match against Roma and if not then he’s expected to be pushing to be involved against Southampton.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s been so disappointing to see Oliver Skipp’s progress halted by injuries after he settled into the squad so well last season. Antonio Conte clearly rates him very highly and while the competition for places in his position is fierce, that can only bring out the best in a young player with the kind of attitude Skipp has.
Here’s hoping he can get a run out against Roma and be back to perfect condition for the opener against Southampton. Whether he starts that game or not, the fact teams can use five substitutes now means that the bench needs to be as strong as possible, so having a player like Skipp sat there would be very useful.
