Gazzetta dello Sport report that Tottenham still want an obligation to buy clause included in the Japhet Tanganga loan to AC Milan, but the Italian club cannot afford it – while they are also looking at other options at centre-back.

The ongoing saga of Tanganga’s departure from North London has dragged on longer than initially expected, with various reports offering explanations for the delays.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (22/07/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness) last week, a fee of £16.9 million had been agreed but there was an issue regarding Milan’s preference for an option to buy deal, whereas Spurs wanted an obligation to buy in place.

However, a later report from Corriere Dello Sport (23/07/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness) indicated that the fee was some way off Spurs’ expectations, with Fabio Paratici set to continue negotiations.

Now, it has emerged that it’s the transfer fee Tottenham are demanding that is causing the problems. According to CalcioMercatoWeb.it, Spurs want a clause with a fee of around £21.2 million to be included in the deal.

The latest report out of Italy said, “Tottenham are still asking for an obligation that Milan does not want to afford.”

It is believed that Milan are looking for a low-cost option to provide cover across their back four, and Tanganga certainly fits the bill in that respect.

Milan do have eyes on other targets though, such as PSG’s Abdou Diallo. While Diallo would be a more expensive option, the Italian side could be tempted to go for the Senegalese defender if the Tanganga deal can’t be ironed out soon.

Spurs Web Opinion

This deal is getting rather messy, and needs to be resolved one way or the other soon. With Joe Rodon leaving in a similar deal today (Fabrizio Romano), and Spurs clearly pushing Tanganga for the exit, it would appear the club are gearing up to bring in reinforcements in the centre of defence.

That said, it would be a shame to see Tanganga leave the club permanently, and Spurs do need to be careful with any obligation to buy deal. We’ve seen Fikayo Tomoro excel over in Italy, and there’s every chance that Tanganga could do the same, so Tottenham have to make sure the fee is right.
