Spurs stalwart Eric Dier has praised the atmosphere around the club, and commended how quickly his new teammates have settled in. The defender also set out the objective for the forthcoming season – be better than last year.
Tottenham may have achieved a top-four finish last season, but they haven’t rested on their laurels in the transfer market, adding the signings of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence to their ranks.
Spurs will be competing on four fronts next season as they aim to maintain their position in the top four, while also challenging for trophies with Antonio Conte at the helm.
Speaking to Football.London after the pre-season win against Rangers on Saturday, Dier was in positive spirits. The 28-year-old lauded the club’s transfer activity this summer, which has led to greater competition for places among the squad.
He said: “I think all the new boys are settling in really well. I think it’s been quite seamless, their transition It’s been fantastic to build more and more depth in the squad.
“We needed that, to have a more competitive squad, to feel that competitiveness every day in training and you feel that, so that’s great for us. I think it’ll lift everyone as individuals and lift us as a team as well.”
Looking ahead to the approaching campaign, Dier has a clear mission in mind: “To be better than last season, it’s that simple.
“To improve and keep getting better, individually and improve and get better to help the team collectively. That’s my sole objective and I think if I accomplish those things, everything else will be better for me individually and us collectively.
“I think there’s definitely a different feeling to one I’ve experienced before here. The amount of signings before the season and experiencing being in a group with such a strong squad already.”
As has been the case with most players, Dier was careful to keep his feet on the ground though: “It’s about picking up where we left off and definitely not getting ahead of ourselves. We can be excited, but we’ve got to be extremely humble and keep working to try and get better.”

It’s fantastic to hear yet another player come out and speak of the positive atmosphere around the club. If all the players are happy and confident, that can only lead to good performances and good results. We cannot wait for the new season to begin and see what this squad is capable of.
