Long-serving defender Ben Davies has just signed a one-year extension on his current contract with Tottenham Hotspur, the club confirmed, and journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has claimed that he fancies the Welshman to be a regular this season.

Davies has been at Spurs for nine years now, and his new contract would see him pass a decade of service for the club (Transfermarkt).

Last summer, it looked as though Davies could be moved on (Napoli Magazine), but he enjoyed a brilliant campaign under Antonio Conte.

Davies became a key figure in the Spurs backline, after adapting to the left-sided centre-back role perfectly once the Italian manager took over. That position had been earmarked as an area for improvement this summer, with Clement Lenglet arriving on loan (Athletic).

Despite the intense competition for places among the Spurs squad, with Lenglet coming in and Sanchez covering at left-centre-back in pre-season, Pitt-Brooke claimed on his Twitter that he expects Davies will be a starter for the majority of the forthcoming campaign.

He said: “New contract for Ben Davies! Huge turnaround for him at Spurs. They considered selling him last summer but he started 34 out of 36 for Conte and is now secured for another three years.

“Another example of Davies’ staying power is that at end of last season Spurs were planning to spend big on an exciting new LCB. But now they’ve got Clement Lenglet in on loan, probably as cover/competition for Davies. I imagine Davies will start the majority of games this year.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ben Davies has been a loyal servant to the club and fully deserves this contract extension. The manner in which he stepped up last season exemplifies everything he offers to this squad; versatility, commitment, and genuine quality.

With the club challenging on four fronts, you cannot overestimate the value of players like Davies. Whether he starts the majority of games or not, having his experience and his mentality among the squad is a massive benefit.
