Those lazily peddling the Spurs-as-bottlers narrative are probably the same people who are claiming that the shutters might as well come down on our already finished season. Wrong on both counts.
With four matches to go we sit fourth, five points clear of Chelsea and three points behind Liverpool with a game in hand. By the time we play Watford on Monday the gap between us and fifth will in all probability be down to two and you wouldn’t be a football fan, not just a Spurs fan, if your sphincter didn’t start twitching a bit if your club was in that position.
We need two wins and a draw from our games against the Hornets, West Brom, Newcastle and Leicester to secure a Moneybags League spot, assuming Chelski don’t go ballistic on the goal difference front. With three of those games at home, and the fate of all four opponents already decided, it looks on paper like a straightforward task, we want though to see evidence on grass.
Harry’s obvious lack of fitness last Saturday has been much discussed. This time last year he was about to embark on a goal scoring spree of semi-epic proportions and something similar this time around would see us comfortably over the dotted line, he is labouring to such a degree though that this seems unlikely, thus we need others to step up to the mark just as they did when he was absent injured instead of present injured.
I wonder if it has crossed Poch’s mind not to start him on Monday, but instead leave it up to Son, Dele and Eriksen to create the sort of rhythm and flow that saw off Bournemouth, Swansea and Chelsea? It must be tempting given how anonymous Kane was against both City and United.
Elsewhere, there doesn’t seem to be much injury news apart from Danny Rose making another comeback. We can thus probably expect the same team that began the semi-final.
Watford are twelfth with 38 points. They’ve not won for seven games and have scored three times in their last six games. They are 17/1 to win on Monday. Seventeen to One!! In a two-horse race? Blimey.
Michael Oliver is the referee.
