Former Tottenham Hotspur star Danny Rose has been discussing the times he nearly left the club, and insists he has no regrets about how long he stayed in North London for, and has cited the career of Kyle Walker as a reference point.

In the last decade, Tottenham have never quite replicated the success they enjoyed during the time when their defence comprised of Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, and Danny Rose.

One by one, those players moved on and Spurs have been unable to replace them adequately, hence the defensive issues at the club right now.

The most successful of those to leave Tottenham is undoubtedly Kyle Walker, who has gone on to win multiple trophies as part of a dominant Manchester City side over the years, as well as establishing himself as a key figure in the England set-up.

Danny Rose has no regrets about staying at Spurs

In a chat with talkSPORT about his time at Tottenham, Rose pondered his feelings regarding the fact he never moved on when others did.

He said: “I don’t regret ever staying at Spurs. Possibly when I was once talking to one club, when Spurs found out I was speaking to this club they shut it down straight away.

“Sometimes I feel if I had been a bit stronger, because I’ve got that in me to be strong and say, ‘No, this is what I want to do’ sort of thing. I sort of wonder, had I been like that, what may have been but in terms of other regrets, no not really. I loved my time at Spurs.”

Rose also touched on the success Walker enjoyed after leaving Spurs, and was asked if he would have liked to have gone, too: “Probably not but at the time, there were rumours that one full-back was allowed to leave, me or Kyle.

“I was told it’s not going to be me basically, so yeah that decision was sort of taken away which at the time I wasn’t angry about because you sort of hoped that Spurs were going somewhere so I didn’t mind. But, coming back now and seeing how many trophies Kyle has collected you sort of do wonder sometimes.”

There is no doubt that Kyle Walker made the right decision for his own career in joining Manchester City – you only have to look at his trophy cabinet to recognise that.

However, it would be interesting to know how things would have played out had Walker stayed with Spurs and Rose gone to City instead.
