Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive start to the new Premier League campaign has seen the club sit top of the table with Ange Postecoglou having given supporters a sense of pride that has been lacking for many a year.

After the eras of Nuno Espirito Santo, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte; fans are now enjoying the brand of football that Tottenham are currently playing under the Australian; something which has been lacking since the prime Mauricio Pochettino era.

During that time, Tottenham had a formidable central defensive pairing of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweirld, and arguably the best pair of full-backs in the league in the form of Danny Rose and Kyle Walker.

Is Danny Rose Spurs’ greatest left-back of the Premier League era?

Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe has singled Rose out for some special praise when he was asked to select a left-back in his best eleven from the players mentioned during the Football First series which he co-hosts along with striker Troy Deeney.

He said: “I’m going Danny Rose. On his day, consistent, strong, quick, loved a tackle. I remember that season with Poch when we should have won the league, just proper man.

“Strong, hard to play against. Proper defender, cos he just loved a tackle. Even in training, he’d be Danny Rose,”

SpursWeb Opinion

It is still frustrating for many fans, including this one, that the Tottenham hierarchy did not look to dip into the transfer market to strengthen the squad in 2018 when we were arguably one or two quality players at most away from being title contenders for the foreseeable future.

One this is for sure, Danny Rose gave his all for Tottenham, and the way he was treated by Jose Mourinho at the end was certainly not befitting the service he had given to this football club.

Jermain Defoe was recently asked by Troy Deeney to name the angriest teammate he has ever played alongside, and he named both Danny Rose and Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

In two spells with the club, Jermain Defoe saw plenty of top-class players come and go. He wasn’t too bad himself, either, scoring 140 goals in 361 appearances for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt).

Having shared a field with the likes of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, and Ledley King, it would probably be pretty easy to guess who Defoe would pick as his most skilful, most intelligent, and most reliable teammates.

However, behind the scenes, players can be very different to their on-field persona. The idea that Danny Rose would be the most angry player Defoe ever came across then, is something of a surprise.

Rose joined Spurs in 2007, and made 213 appearances for the North London club (Transfermarkt) before being released on a free transfer in 2021.

Danny Rose was an angry player, says Defoe

Speaking to the former Watford striker, Troy Deeney, for BBC Radio 5 Live’s The Players Channel (via Facebook), Defoe was asked to name his angriest teammate.

He said: “Danny Rose was angry.” Deeney replied: “Yeah I played with him a bit.”

Defoe then added: “Benoit Assou-Ekotto. Remember Benoit? Angry!” Deeney seemed shocked by that one, adding: “He always seemed chilled though?” Defoe simply replied: “Angry.”

Unfortunately, he offered very little explanation for his answers beyond describing the pair as angry. Maybe it’s just something in the blood of left-backs.

Spurs Web Opinion

After seeing Danny Rose confront Jose Mourinho in the Tottenham documentary, I can see why he would be considered an angry man. He was fairly calm in that discussion, but you could see how riled up he was.

Assou-Ekotto is a surprising one though, as he famously didn’t even particularly like football, so you wouldn’t think he would care enough to get angry.

Ben Foster has revealed that Danny Rose once opened up to him about Tottenham’s impossible bonus structure back when the left-back played for the Lilywhites.

Rose was a key member of the peak Mauricio Pochettino years, alongside the likes of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Kyle Walker, Mousa Dembele, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Victor Wanyama, Hugo Lloris and more.

However, while Tottenham’s impressive XI was winning a lot of games, it appears their win bonus was a hard box to tick for the squad.

These days, a lot of footballers have win bonuses, goal bonuses, clean sheet bonuses and more written into their club contracts, but it comes as no surprise that Daniel Levy didn’t part win the club’s money easily.

Not only did Spurs have to win to get a bonus, they had to win against a Big Six rival and win the game by a two-goal margin or more. How often do you beat Man City 2-0 away from home?

Daniel Levy made the Spurs bonuses very difficult

Foster said (The Fozcast): “One of the lads, Danny Rose, was at Tottenham and Daniel Levy is so famously known for being an absolute businessman, brutal, ruthless businessman.

“Apparently, their bonus schedule, their bonus payments were almost impossible to achieve, almost impossible.

“To actually get paid a bonus, you would only get it for beating one of the big boys, one of the top six teams. So you’re talking a Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and apparently, I swear on my life, this is what he said to me, you’ve got to beat them by two clear goals as well.

“[1-0] It’s not enough mate, you ain’t getting that bonus. Winning games, they expect you to win games as Tottenham manager, at Tottenham apparently.

“To get the bonus you have to obliterate your opponent. You have to beat Man City 2-0, 3-0 to get that bonus payment which is bonkers. I was saying ‘Rosey, there’s no chance, that’s impossible’.

“He was just saying ‘I know Fozzy, I know’. He said there was one time they were winning 2-0 and in the last minute they conceded a goal and everyone was looking at each other thinking ‘OK come on lads we’ve missed out on the bonus’, and they’ve still won the big game.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

This comes as absolutely no surprise. However, it does feel as though Daniel Levy is submitting to Postecoglou and what he wants to build, which is nice to see. The big question is will he continue to back to manager to take things to the next level, which he arguably failed at doing with Pochettino.

Danny Rose says he did not realise just how much Chelsea hated Tottenham until the infamous ‘battle of the bridge’ in 2016.

Tottenham were chasing Leicester City for the title that season and had already lost a lot of ground to the Foxes heading into the clash at Stamford Bridge, which the Lilywhites had to win to keep the title race alive.

Ahead of the game, a couple of the Chelsea players had said that they were keen to ensure that Spurs would not beat the Foxes to the title (Sky Sports).

What followed was one of the most fiercely contested (and some would say the dirtiest) games of modern times, with players from both sides flying into tackles and with several fights breaking out, including one after the full-time whistle.

Danny Rose can’t believe Pochettino went to Chelsea

Rose has now opened up about his experiences of the game and admitted that he was extremely surprised to see Mauricio Pochettino, who was in the away dugout in that game, take over at Chelsea, given the rivalry between the clubs.

Watch what the former Tottenham man told talkSPORT about the infamous game in 2016:

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham had effectively lost the title ahead of that game, owing to their failure to beat West Brom at White Hart Lane in the match before.

The game at Stamford Bridge effectively became about the two sets of players making a point to one another. It is quite unbelievable that there was no red card shown as there could have easily been three or four.

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Danny Rose has labelled Tanguy Ndombele a ‘special’ player, despite the Frenchman’s struggles to establish himself at the North London club.

Tanguy Ndombele signed for Tottenham in 2019 for a then club-record £55m plus £10m in add-ons (Guardian).

There were huge expectations placed on the playmaker, but Spurs fans have only seen that talent in glimpses during his time at the club.

When Antonio Conte took over at Spurs, Ndombele quickly found himself forced to the fringes of the Italian’s squad and spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan back at his former club Lyon. The Frenchman was then sent to Napoli for the 2022/23 campaign.

While over in Italy, Ndombele found himself part of a title-winning squad, but his involvement for Napoli was minimal. The 26-year-old made 40 appearances in total for the Serie A champions last term, though most of those appearances were from the bench (Transfermarkt).

The skilful midfielder is now back with Tottenham for pre-season and there are murmurs that he could find himself given a fresh start by new boss Ange Postecoglou for the season ahead.

Ndombele should be given a chance

Danny Rose and Ndombele crossed paths briefly when the latter joined the club, and now Rose has spoken about how he hopes Postecoglou gives Ndombele a chance this year.

He told talkSPORT (27/07/23 at 18:14): “I only got to have six months with Ndombele. He is so special. I hope he is given a chance. He would be like a new signing for Spurs in there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If by some miracle Ange Postecoglou could get the best out of Tanguy Ndombele, we could have one of the best midfielders in the league sat right under our noses.

Many managers have tried and failed to use Ndombele effectively in the past, but he could be worth one final attempt.

Danny Rose has been speaking candidly about his time at Tottenham Hotspur, and revealed he nearly joined a London rival in a move which would have seen him blacklisted by the Lilywhites.

The left-back was fortunate enough to be a part of one of the more successful periods in the club’s recent history, forming a brilliant defensive partnership with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, and Kyle Walker.

Rose amassed 214 appearances for Spurs and bagged ten goals in total for the club before finally ending his time in North London in 2021 (Transfermarkt).

At his peak, Rose was a mainstay in the Tottenham first team and is heralded as one of the better left-sided defenders to grace the turf at White Hart Lane over the years.

He did spend some time out on loan at other clubs during his career but a permanent move away from Spurs never materialised until Rose had passed his peak.

Danny Rose could have signed for a rival club

Despite remaining loyal to Tottenham throughout the years, it seems Rose did once have the chance to leave the club for a fierce rival, though he won’t reveal who that was.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Rose said: “I spoke to a team across the river and I don’t think I’d have been allowed back at Tottenham had that have materialised.

“I can’t say [who it was] because I don’t want to get them into trouble or anything but, yeah, had that have come up, I don’t think the Tottenham fans would be singing my name like that anymore.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One can only imagine Rose is talking about either Arsenal or Chelsea in this instance. A move to any other London rivals wouldn’t be quite as controversial as those two, and it’s only Arsenal or Chelsea really where Spurs fans would have turned on Rose.

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Danny Rose has been discussing the times he nearly left the club, and insists he has no regrets about how long he stayed in North London for, and has cited the career of Kyle Walker as a reference point.

In the last decade, Tottenham have never quite replicated the success they enjoyed during the time when their defence comprised of Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, and Danny Rose.

Danny Rose

One by one, those players moved on and Spurs have been unable to replace them adequately, hence the defensive issues at the club right now.

The most successful of those to leave Tottenham is undoubtedly Kyle Walker, who has gone on to win multiple trophies as part of a dominant Manchester City side over the years, as well as establishing himself as a key figure in the England set-up.

Danny Rose has no regrets about staying at Spurs

In a chat with talkSPORT about his time at Tottenham, Rose pondered his feelings regarding the fact he never moved on when others did.

He said: “I don’t regret ever staying at Spurs. Possibly when I was once talking to one club, when Spurs found out I was speaking to this club they shut it down straight away.

“Sometimes I feel if I had been a bit stronger, because I’ve got that in me to be strong and say, ‘No, this is what I want to do’ sort of thing. I sort of wonder, had I been like that, what may have been but in terms of other regrets, no not really. I loved my time at Spurs.”

Rose also touched on the success Walker enjoyed after leaving Spurs, and was asked if he would have liked to have gone, too: “Probably not but at the time, there were rumours that one full-back was allowed to leave, me or Kyle.

“I was told it’s not going to be me basically, so yeah that decision was sort of taken away which at the time I wasn’t angry about because you sort of hoped that Spurs were going somewhere so I didn’t mind. But, coming back now and seeing how many trophies Kyle has collected you sort of do wonder sometimes.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Kyle Walker made the right decision for his own career in joining Manchester City – you only have to look at his trophy cabinet to recognise that.

However, it would be interesting to know how things would have played out had Walker stayed with Spurs and Rose gone to City instead.

Danny Rose never did seal a big move away from Spurs during the peak of his career, but the former Tottenham star has now revealed he discussed a transfer with Paris Saint-Germain at one point.

As part of a Tottenham defence including the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, and Kyle Walker, Danny Rose was once deemed one of the top left-backs in England, if not Europe.

Rose enjoyed a number of brilliant years at Spurs under Mauricio Pochettino, and went on to rack up 214 appearances for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt) before finally leaving the club permanently in the summer of 2021.

Aside from a handful of loan spells to clubs such as Newcastle United, Sunderland, and Bristol City, Rose spent the best part of 14 years in North London. A big move never came to fruition for Rose, though it appears he may have had the chance at one point.

Rose spoke to PSG about a transfer from Spurs

Turns out, French giants Paris Saint-Germain once came calling for Rose and he was close to joining them roughly five years ago.

On how close he was to leaving Spurs, Rose told talkSPORT: “Until a bid actually comes in, you don’t know how close ‘close’ is. But one of the big boys in France, I was close to going there.

“I spoke to Paris [Saint-Germain] once upon a time. It was probably a year before the Champions League final, five years ago probably I spoke to them.

“I’ve spoken to teams in Italy and Turkey but as I said, until a bid actually comes in how close are you?”

Spurs Web Opinion

Danny Rose would have won a few league titles with PSG, but other than that, there is little to suggest that going over to France would have been the best move for his career. It is always interesting to wonder what if, though.

FourFourTwo asked Danny Rose to pick the best eleven from the players he has played alongside for club and country, with Harry Kane being the only current Tottenham player to make the list.

Nine of the eleven players chosen are those Rose played alongside at Tottenham, with Ryan Bertrand and Raheem Sterling being the only others to make it into the team.

The left-back made a surprising call in goal, naming Huerelho Gomes ahead of Hugo Lloris, while his centre-back pairing might also raise eyebrows, with the Belgian pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen making the team over Ledley King.

Danny Rose picks his all-time teammate XI

Rose went with a formidable midfield pairing of Mousa Dembele and Luka Modric, with Christian Eriksen playing as the advanced midfielder.

There was no place for Son Heung-min in the team, with Gareth Bale and Sterling playing on either flank, with Tottenham’s record goalscorer unsurprisingly leading the line.

Spurs Web Opinion

While many may be surprised at King’s omission, it is worth noting that the left-back hardly played alongside the former Spurs captain, having spent a few years out on loan after signing for the club back in 2007.

By the time Rose returned from his loan spell at Sunderland in 2013 to stake his claim for a first-team spot, King had already hung up his boots.

Danny Rose has revealed that Harry Kane once told him he would score 45 goals a season if he played for Manchester City.

Despite Tottenham’s struggles this season, Kane has continued scoring prolifically, with the striker having found the back of the net 27 times in the Premier League this campaign, with two more games to go (Transfermarkt).

Harry Kane

However, the striker is not in contention for the Premier League Golden Boot this season, with Erling Haaland sitting well clear of the Tottenham man with 36 strikes to his name so far.

The Norwegian does have the benefit of playing for a brilliant Manchester City side, who create chances galore each game and look on course to comfortably win the title once again.

That perhaps raises the question of how many Kane would have scored had he played for Pep Guardiola’s men and Rose revealed that it is something the England captain has himself talked about in the past.

The former Spurs left-back told Stadium Astro: “I remember when I was still at the club, we were having a conversation and he said, ‘gosh, if I was at [Manchester] City I would score 45 goals’.

“I remember thinking, ‘yeah, okay Harry, calm down’, and actually looking at it now I think he’s right, he could easily score 45 goals.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Had Kane got a move to Manchester City in 2021, there is no doubt that he would have taken his goalscoring exploits to a different level.

He would also have a couple of titles to his name, thus putting to rest any doubts over whether he is one of the greatest players to grace the Premier League.

Danny Rose has revealed that he has spoken to Harry Kane about the striker’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Spurs left-back was part of the Tottenham Hotspur side which reached the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino alongside Kane.

Rose was part of Stadium Astro’s punditry panel for Spurs’ 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa yesterday afternoon which saw Kane net his 210th Premier League goal in the dying stages of the game from the penalty spot.

Tottenham once again started the game slowly and found themselves having now conceded seven goals in the opening ten minutes across their last five Premier League matches when Leon Bailey easily beat Ben Davies down the right flank to square the ball to Jacob Ramsey to beat Fraser Forster.

Villa added a second 18 minutes before the end when Douglas Luiz scored from a free-kick to pile the misery on Tottenham, who are now seriously at risk of missing out on European football.

Rose admitted that he has recently been in contact with Kane and asked him about his plans for next season, with the former defender admitting that he believes Kane holds the power in the situation rather than chairman Daniel Levy.

He told Stadium Astro: “I texted Harry [Kane] probably about ten days ago, just seeing how he was, and then I asked him the question, ‘What’s happening?’

“He didn’t give too much away, and then I saw him after the Man United game and we had 20 minutes.

“We spoke and he’s very much clued up on what he’s going to do next season, and for me I don’t think Daniel [Levy] holds the cards with Harry at the minute.”

Kane has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who are currently in contention for Champions League football next season (Sky Sports).

SpursWeb Opinion

It is a sad state of affairs when Tottenham fans would not begrudge Kane the opportunity to leave the club and win trophies elsewhere, since it really is not going to happen anytime soon in north London.

Levy will know that this summer realistically represents his last chance to cash in on Kane and pocket upwards of £80million for his exit; whether he is prepared to strengthen a Premier League rival remains to be seen.

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Danny Rose has claimed Harry Kane will be seriously considering leaving the club in the summer because he simply deserves better.

Tottenham absolutely capitulated against Newcastle United yesterday, coming away from St James’ Park on the wrong end of a 6-1 scoreline.

The result was a new low in a frustrating and very disappointing season for the Lilywhites.

Harry Kane scored the only goal for Spurs as he continued to build on an impressive individual campaign this year. The 29-year-old now has 26 goals in all competitions this term (Transfermarkt).

There has been plenty of talk regarding Kane’s future, as another season without a trophy comes to pass.

Manchester United and Bayern Munich have been joined by Real Madrid and PSG among the possible destinations for the England captain should he choose to move on (Daily Mail).

Kane is approaching the final year of his current contract at Tottenham and progress on a new deal has been slow, to say the least.

Now, Rose thinks the time has come for Kane to leave Spurs, as he told Sky Sports (23/04/2023, 6:38 pm) the talismanic striker is better than the current state of affairs at the club.

Rose said: “There have been a few times where I have seen him lose it and today will be one of them days.

“For me, I can imagine him being sat there thinking, as everyone in football does, I deserve better than this, and I hope he gets it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As much as I would love for Harry Kane to be here forever, we will have to replace him at some point, whether that be because he leaves or retires.

He really does deserve way better than this right now, and I would not blame him at all for moving on in the summer.

Danny Rose has remarked that seeing some of Tottenham’s defending in the first half against Newcastle United left him wondering how he is not currently employed in the world of football.

Tottenham’s performances have gone from bad to worse over the last few months and the Lilywhites served up what was by far their worst display of the season at St James’ Park on Sunday.

They found themselves 5-0 down with little over 20 minutes left on the clock, with the team looking completely disorganised at the back after Cristian Stellini decided to tweak the system.

Reports now indicate that Stellini’s future at Tottenham is in major doubt, with sources at the club unsure whether the Italian will be in charge of Manchester United’s trip to N17 on Thursday (Evening Standard).

Rose was shocked by what he saw from his former side in the first half at St James’ Park, with the 32-year-old seemingly suggesting that he could be of help.

The former Spurs left-back said at half-time (via The Daily Mail): “I was wrong (about the back four). But there are so many mistakes.

“And all I’ve been thinking of first half is how am I unemployed!

“To be 5-0 down after 20 minutes is unheard of for a club that is supposedly a massive club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Rose is certainly not the man to help fix what is wrong at Tottenham at the moment but there is no doubt that the club have to act as the decision to put Stellini in charge has not worked.

The obvious decision would be to hand Ryan Mason the reins until the end of the season in order to freshen up the team’s tactical approach.

Danny Rose has waxed lyrical about how to complete Harry Kane is as a striker and confidently asserted that the Tottenham man will beat Alan Shearer’s Premier League record.

Kane netted the match-winner yet again for Spurs on Saturday as they overcome Brighton 2-1, with the striker taking his tally to 23 goals in the Premier League season so far (Transfermarkt).

The England captain is showing no signs of slowing down in front of goal and would fancy his chances of breaking Shearer’s all-time record of 260 Premier League goals in the next three to four seasons if he carries on scoring at the same pace.

The one asterisk next to Kane’s name is the fact that he is yet to lift any silverware, and reports have indicated that the striker might push for a move away from Tottenham this summer in order to give himself the best chance of getting his hands on a trophy (Football Insider).

However, Rose is hopeful that his former teammate will be able to lift a trophy with the Lilywhites to add to the legacy he has already created at the club.

The former Spurs left-back told FourFourTwo: “I’ve played with a few fantastic strikers, but Kane was frightening.

“Harry’s heading, goalscoring and penalty record are simply phenomenal, and he has the professionalism, ambition and hunger to match.

“I just hope he wins some silverware – and at Tottenham.

“He’ll overtake Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record, and it’d be great if he also bagged a trophy or two.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Unless we manage to finish in the top four and attract a manager like Nagelsmann or Pochettino, it is difficult to see Kane signing a new contract.

So, Tottenham might have big a decision to make on whether to cash in on the striker and rebuild the squad or to keep him and risk losing him on a free in 2024.

The Sun have revealed that former Tottenham man Danny Rose could soon be playing his football in the EFL or even consider moving to Greece or the MLS.

Rose racked up 214 appearances for Spurs during 13 seasons at the club and was even seen as the best left-back in the Premier League for a period under Mauricio Pochettino.

He also earned 29 caps for his England and played five times at the 2018 World Cup as the Three Lions were knocked out in the semi-final stage.

The left-back joined Watford on a free transfer back in 2021 after leaving Spurs but only made nine appearances for the Hornets before his contract was terminated following their relegation to the Championship last season.

Rose has been a free agent since then and The Sun have now suggested that the 32-year-old could drop down to the lower leagues to play football again.

The report explains that Rose has been training with York City to build up his fitness this season and could consider signing for the club while he may also be tempted to sign for his hometown club, Doncaster Rovers.

It is also suggested that Sunderland could look to add him to their squad to help with their pursuit of a Championship playoff spot.

The Sun add that David Beckham’s Inter Miami might offer Rose a chance to move to the MLS while AEK Athens could make another move for him after enquiring about the former Tottenham man last summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

At 32 years of age, Rose is certainly good enough to do a job for a top Championship club if he can sort out his fitness.

However, I would not be surprised if he decides to experience something different like Major League Soccer rather than dropping down to the EFL.

Danny Rose has suggested that Tottenham will have to sack Antonio Conte to send a message that the Italian’s public rant on Saturday was unacceptable.

Conte unleashed a tirade in his post-match press conference after Spurs conceded two late goals at St Mary’s to throw away two points.

That took Tottenham’s tally of goals conceded this season to 40, which is the highest among the top 12.

The Spurs head coach questioned the players’ commitment to the team’s cause and accused them of being selfish.

He also suggested that the dressing room was lacking in the fight and desire needed to see out wins (Football.London).

Perhaps the most alarming part of Conte’s rant was his suggestion that the club are used to failing over the last two decades, irrespective of which manager is in charge.

Rose believes that the Italian will be replaced by an interim manager as the club would not tolerate such statements publicly.

The former Tottenham left-back admitted that he would love to see Mauricio Pochettino back at N17 but questioned if the club would go back to the Argentine after sacking him back in 2019.

Rose told Stadium Astro: “After that interview, I don’t see how it is possible that he will be the manager after the break.

“I think the club has to set a stance out that a manager cannot criticise the hierarchy in public like that. I think the next manager will be an interim. After that, I am not sure, I am really not sure.

“Going and getting Poch would be admitting that they were wrong. I am not sure the club would admit they were wrong in sacking him. For me, I would love him to go back. I would say Poch.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think it is quite clear that Levy is more than ready to swallow his pride and reappoint Pochettino if he feels that would be the right decision, with the Spurs chairman trying to bring the Argentine back in 2021.

However, it seems like the club’s hierarchy are certainly not unanimous in wanting Pochettino, with Fabio Paratici appearing to be one of those who is opposed to the idea.

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Danny Rose has named Cristian Romero as his favourite player in the current squad during a recent appearance on Sky Sports News (08/03/23 from 20:00 onwards).

Romero played a big part in the 0-0 draw against AC Milan in the Champions League last night, for all the wrong reasons.

After picking up a yellow card early in the game, the 24-year-old picked up a second with 12 minutes to go for a reckless challenge on Theo Hernandez.

Cristian Romero

Ultimately, the red card for Romero may not have impacted the final result all that much, but it was yet another worrying sign of his ill-discipline.

It’s an area assistant manager Cristian Stellini has spoken on the need for improvement before (Football.London).

Nevertheless, Romero’s exploits at Spurs have generally seen him receive praise, and the latest comes from former Tottenham defender Rose.

The 32-year-old was reporting on the game with Sky Sports News, and named Romero as someone he would have liked to have played alongside.

On the circumstances surrounding Romero’s red card, Rose said: “Romero is down on the floor injured. But I think the red card, well a second yellow, is going to be for him.

“[He’s] one of my favourite players for Tottenham. I wish I had the chance of playing with him.

“But he does run the risk of being a little rash. It’s part of his game. I am not sure he is going to change that at the age he is. You have to accept that.

“But making that mistake in the magnitude of a game like this. The last 13 minutes and needing a goal. It’s unacceptable.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I rate Cristian Romero very highly and I think he will continue to be one of the best defenders in the game, but he really has to work on his discipline and timing of tackles.

He would be far more effective if he stayed on his feet and considered his next move a little better.

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Danny Rose has been speaking to Sky Sports’ Football Daily about how demanding Mauricio Pochettino was as a manager, including how he operated in training.

Rose played some of his best football during Pochettino’s spell at the North London club and was part of the team that lost in the Champions League final in 2019.

Throughout his career, Rose racked up 214 appearances for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt).

When it comes to comparing managers at the club, Rose has a fair bit of experience to draw upon.

His Spurs career ran into difficulties when he clashed with Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s time at the club (GiveMeSport).

After crashing out of the Champions League last night, current boss Antonio Conte’s future appears to be under increasing scrutiny, with the man himself even speculating that he may end up being sacked (Prime – via Fabrizio Romano).

Pochettino has apparently expressed an interest in returning to Spurs if Conte does leave (The Times).

Now, Rose has revealed what life was like working under the Argentine manager.

He said: “It was very difficult. It took a while to get used to, because I had never experienced a manager and a coach like [Pochettino].

“He’s very thorough, very precise, he’s a disciplinarian. He records training. He was the first manager I came across who records training, records gym sessions. There’s no hiding places.

“There was one game, we played Crystal Palace away and I think we drew or won, and I thought I had a good game.

“He called me into his office the next day to analyse the game. I thought there was going to be some good clips. He had 26 bad clips of what I did wrong.

“That’s how he is as a manager. For me, I’d love him to return. Not only to Tottenham, just into management, because I’ve worked under him, I know how good he is. Football is missing a top, top coach.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Sounds intense, but clearly that approach got results and endeared the players to his methods.

There’s no doubting Mauricio Pochettino is a great manager, and I’m sure he will end up in club football again very soon.

In an appearance on Sky Sports (08/03/2023) from 22:00 onwards, former Tottenham star Danny Rose took a swipe at the club after the team crashed out of the Champions League, but had to stop himself for fear of being banned from the training ground.

Rose made 214 appearances for Tottenham (Transfermarkt) during his time with the club and was part of the side that lost in the Champions League final back in 2019.

He was released on a free transfer in the summer of 2021 after falling out of favour at the club, but has remained close to Tottenham in the years since.

Rose is currently a free agent, but the 32-year-old began training with Spurs last year to keep himself sharp (Daily Mail).

Rose watched Tottenham limp out of the Champions League this week, after failing to overturn AC Milan’s one-goal advantage from the first leg of their knockout tie.

The performance from the Spurs players and the situation at the club left Rose with plenty to say.

He said: “Going at the hierarchy… I still look to go into the Spurs training ground so I’ll have to be careful what I say but I think that everybody has to be held accountable.

“I heard recently Daniel Levy said that the signings have not been great and it’s bizarre as I’m sure I said something like that six years ago and got fined two weeks wages but here we are.

“Everybody has to be held accountable and I think it will be interesting to see where they go from here until the end of the season.”

Rose appeared to be referencing when he gave an interview to the press stating that Tottenham were signing players he had to Google back in 2017 (Standard).

Meanwhile, Daniel Levy did admit earlier this year that recruitment at the club had not been good enough in recent years (Athletic).

Spurs Web Opinion

The result and performance last night, and indeed the whole season, has been so devoid of passion and fight and it’s depressing to watch.

This season feels like a write-off, and something drastically needs to change at the club, from the top to the bottom.

Although Eddie Howe’s men have a game in hand over the Lilywhites, their recent form has left a lot to be desired, with the Magpies having won just one of their last seven Premier League matches.

Spurs themselves have struggled for consistency over recent months and are without some key players at the moment, with the likes of Hugo Lloris, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon and Yves Bissouma out with long-term injuries.

Antonio Conte’s men will be hoping that their assured display against the Hammers on Sunday was a sign of things to come.

Rose has opined that his former side showed enough in the second half of last season and in the first few months of this campaign, to suggest that they will clinch the fourth spot.

The 32-year-old told JOE’s YouTube channel: “The run that they had towards the end of last season under Conte finishing fourth and the run they had until November time this season.

“They just need to get through this blip and finish well in the last three months. I see them catching Newcastle. They’ll finish fourth and qualify again for the Champions League.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I find it quite unbelievable that we are now in fourth place, given how poorly we have played over the last few months. In many ways, we are lucky that Liverpool and Chelsea are having such terrible campaigns.

In fact, I believe that Liverpool, not Newcastle, are likely to be our biggest competitor for a top-four spot. The Reds are just seven points behind us with two games in hand at the moment.
