The Daily Express have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur would be clear at the top of the Premier League table had there been no VAR this season.
Tottenham were fortunate to have a decision go in their favour a couple of weeks ago as VAR failed to intervene after Luis Diaz’s goal against them was incorrectly ruled offside.
The PMGOL have released the audio of the incident, which showed a miscommunication between VAR and the on-field referee led to the offside decision being upheld (Sky Sports).
Spurs could be clear at the top without VAR
Despite benefiting on that occasion, The Express explain that VAR has actually proven costly for Spurs over the course of the first eight league matches.
It is explained that were it not for VAR, Tottenham would have 22 points rather than the 20 they currently have.
They would have a three-point lead over Arsenal at the summit of the Premier League table as their North London rivals would have a point less than they currently do without VAR.
Tottenham are thus the biggest losers from the use of the technology so far this season.
Spurs Web Opinion
These sorts of claims make no sense at all as it assume that the result would not change depending on whether a goal is given at a certain point in the game.
Teams react in different ways to going a goal up or goal down in matches, which is why it is complete nonsense to speculate what the table would look like by just removing the VAR interventions.
