Former Portugal international Carlos Xavier has claimed that Tottenham target Pedro Porro is on the same level as Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo.
Multiple publications have reported over the last few weeks that Antonio Conte is keen on signing an elite right wing-back in January, with Porro said to be Tottenham’s top target for the role (The Athletic).
A Bola (26/12/22 as relayed by Sport Witness) claimed earlier this week that the Lilywhites have ‘gone on the attack’ for the 23-year-old ahead of the January transfer window.
The report explained that Tottenham had reached out to Sporting through intermediaries to know how much the Spaniard would cost, and the Portuguese club had made it clear that the player’s €45m (£39.6m) release clause would have to be met.
Porro once again demonstrated his class for Sporting on Thursday, scoring a goal and assisting another in their 3-0 home win against Pacos de Ferreira.
On the back of that display, Xavier insisted that the right-back is one of the best in the world in his position.
The 60-year-old told Bancada: “He [Pedro Porro] is really a player with such intensity and intelligence that I believe he is one of the best in Europe, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joao Cancelo.
“He is really a player who has a margin of progression ahead of him. I have no doubt at all that could be the future full-back for the Spanish national team.”

Those are certainly high words of praise from Xavier and shows just why Spurs are so desperate to snap up Porro. Although he might not be at Trent’s or Cancelo’s level at the moment, the Spaniard is a bit of a cross between the two as he possesses excellent crossing ability like the Liverpool star while also being good at carrying the ball like the City star.
