A new report from A Bola (31/12/22 via Sport Witness) suggests Tottenham Hotspur are in contact with the agent of Sporting Lisbon star Marcus Edwards to discuss a possible return to the club.
Edwards was born and raised in London and made his way through the Tottenham academy as a youngster. He made just one appearance for the first-team (Transfermarkt) before moving to Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães SC in 2019.
The 24-year-old then joined Sporting Lisbon in January 2022 and has gone on to great things with the club. Edwards has registered nine goals and eight assists in 23 games across all competitions for Sporting this season (Transfermarkt).
He was particularly impressive in Sporting’s Champions League run this year, where he faced Spurs on two occasions and caused all kinds of problems for his former club. Edwards even scored against the Lilywhites in the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to mark his return to London in style.
Edwards has since been linked with a move back to Tottenham (Record) and the club could even benefit from a sell-on clause which has potential to reduce the transfer fee by 40-45% (Alasdair Gold).
It has also been suggested Spurs could take advantage of this clause and use it to push through a deal for Edwards’ Sporting teammate, Pedro Porro (Correio da Manhã).
Now, the latest report from A Bola claims Spurs are already “taking the first steps” to make a move for Edwards happen, and have already been in contact with his agent, Jorge Mendes.
Spurs Web Opinion
Marcus Edwards looked fantastic against us and is playing some great football in a very exciting Sporting Lisbon side. I’d certainly be happy to see him come back to Spurs, but I just don’t know if he is the kind of player Antonio Conte is looking for in his system, so I can’t see us signing him right now.
