Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has said that the Portuguese club will only sell Tottenham target Pedro Porro if the right-back’s release clause is met.
Multiple reports over the last two months have revealed that Antonio Conte is set to prioritise strengthening at right wing-back in January (90 min), with Porro emerging as the Spurs head coach’s top target over recent weeks (The Athletic).
The print edition of A Bola (26/12/22 as relayed by Sport Witness) was the latest to report on Tottenham’s pursuit of the 23-year-old, stating on Monday that the Lilywhites had stepped up their efforts to sign the player.
The report revealed that Spurs have reached out to Sporting through intermediaries to find out how much Porro would cost.
It was explained that while the Portuguese club were planning on selling the Spaniard for around €30m (£26.4m) next summer, they would only let him leave in January if his €45m (£39.6m) release clause was met.
Amorim has now confirmed the same, stating that Porro is ‘safe’ until a club stumps up his release clause.
The 37-year-old said in his press conference on Wednesday (via The Metro): “With regard to Pedro Porro, we know that there are players in our team who, because of what they have done, are now wanted by other clubs. We had this problem in the summer too.
“What I was told is that he can only leave if the clause is triggered. And if the clause is triggered, there is nothing we can do. He is playing really well. Like me, he is living one of the best moments of his career and he is only focused on Sporting.
“We are prepared for anything and we know that there are clubs who can pay the clause. But, until that happens, I think Pedro is safe.”

£40m is quite a steep price to pay for a right-back, who is not yet proven at the very top level. I would be surprised if Tottenham paid that amount. I would expect the North London club to turn their attention to other targets like Denzel Dumfries if Sporting do not soften their stance on Porro.
