Journalist Dean Jones has said that despite Tottenham holding a genuine interest in Pedro Porro, it is ‘unclear’ whether the North London club will be able to sign the Sporting Lisbon star in January.

The Athletic suggested last week that Antonio Conte is keen on adding an elite right wing-back to his squad, with Porro having been identified as the Spurs boss’ top target.

Multiple Portuguese publications have reported on the North London club’s pursuit of the 23-year-old over recent weeks.

A Bola (26/12/22 as relayed by Sport Witness) were the latest to do so on Monday, stating that the Lilywhites have ‘gone on the attack’ for Porro ahead of January.

The report explained that Tottenham had reached out to Sporting through intermediaries to know how much the Spaniard would cost, and the Portuguese club had made it clear that the player’s €45m (£39.6m) release clause would have to be met.

This was subsequently confirmed by Sporting boss Ruben Amorim in his press conference on Wednesday, with the 37-year-old stating that the right-back is ‘safe’ until a club activates his release clause (The Metro).

When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of Porro, Jones has now told GiveMeSport: “I think it is a genuine interest, and his style of play would make sense in the setup of Tottenham. It’s unclear as to whether it can actually happen right now.”

Porro would be a very good fit for Conte’s system, given his crossing ability and his proficiency in one vs one situations.  The Spaniard’s age and his high ceiling also make him a typical Tottenham kind of signing but I doubt if the North Londoners would pay £40m for him when they could get him for a cheaper fee next summer.
