Pedro Porro brushed aside Tim Sherwood’s fierce criticism of him following his debut against Leicester City, insisting that he is used to proving critics wrong.
Porro certainly did not have the best of starts to his Tottenham career after his move for Sporting Lisbon in the January transfer window, with the right-back struggling defensively as the Foxes emerged 4-1 winners in his debut.
The 23-year-old also struggled in his second start against Wolves but he has shown in the last two matches against Nottingham Forest and Southampton just why the Lilywhites broke the bank to bring him to the club.
The Spaniard was a constant threat going forward in both matches and scored his first goal in a Spurs shirt during the 3-3 draw at St Mary’s.
Following his debut at the King Power Stadium, Sherwood said about the former Sporting star: “He’s so bad it’s unbelievable” (talkSPORT).
Porro has now insisted that he remains confident in his own ability, pointing out that it was always going to take some time for him to get used to a new environment at Tottenham.
When asked about the former interim Spurs boss’ comments, the right-back told The Guardian: “It doesn’t annoy me, exactly.
“You know people will have their opinion, they’re going to say you played badly, that you’re no good or whatever.
“You try not to even notice, but it’s impossible. There’s always someone saying: ‘Did you see this?’
“You read what’s said about a player who has been at the club two days – two days – and that hits you because you think: ‘I’ve just got here’.
“I’m not a machine that goes like this and that’s it, I know everyone, I’m integrated. I really hope he keeps saying bad things about me that will make me stronger.
“But it’s true that it made an impression because I had been at a big club for so little time and well.
“Let me loose in a prison and I’ll end up owning the place. But it’s hard: it was only a week, I’d never played a minute at Manchester City, never played in England in my life.
“It’s a couple of days, I start against Leicester. What do you want? For me to score five and cut out 70 balls?! Anyone can have a bad day.
“From there, I just keep on: take English classes, get into the group, adapt.
“For me, it (Sherwood’s comments) makes no difference. I don’t know him. I don’t know what had happened for him to speak.
“People passed it on, saying he had spoken badly about me. But he won’t be the first who then had to shut his mouth.”

The extra scrutiny is something that Porro will have to get used to, now that he is playing for a club like Spurs.
However, the 23-year-old certainly comes across as someone who has a lot of confidence in his own ability and there have already been signs to suggest that he is going to be a top player for many years to come.
