Younes Kaboul has named Luka Modric as the player who stood out in training at Tottenham, describing the Real Madrid midfielder as a ‘magician’.

It was at Tottenham that Modric first hit the limelight, developing into one of the best midfielders in the Premier League following his move from Dinamo Zagreb to White Hart Lane in 2008.

He has not looked back since leaving North London for Los Blancos in 2012, having been a key part of five Champions League-winning sides at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Modric will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest players of the modern era, having won the Ballon d’Or back in 2018, and he is still going strong at the highest level even at 38 years of age.

Luka Modric surprised Younes Kaboul at Tottenham

Kaboul played with some excellent players during his time at Spurs, including the likes of Rafael Van de Vaart and Harry Kane, but he picked out Modric as the player who most impressed him, while also mentioning Jermain Defoe as someone who stood out in training.

The Frenchman said on the Official Tottenham Hotspur Podcast: “I will share something quickly. When I first came in I was watching one player with how he was training. I was surprised by his workrate, in the gym, on the pitch, he would stay.

“I thought Jermain was the best trainer. I was with him at Tottenham twice, Portsmouth and Sunderland, but I would say Modric, he was like a magician basically. He was making us play well and if he was less good we wouldn’t play as well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The Tottenham team during the 2011-12 season remains my favourite side to date as we were just a pleasure to watch at the time.

The way we controlled the game with Modric, Parker and Van der Vaart in the middle of the park was surreal with the exhilarating pace of Bale and Lennon out wide scaring defences across the Premier League.
