Heung-min Son has been putting his body on the line for South Korea this week on international duty and there are fears he may have picked up a knock as a result. However, the Tottenham Hotspur captain insists he is fine and relishes the physical challenge.

Since the departure of Harry Kane this summer, it has been up to Heung-min Son to step up and become the star of the show at Tottenham. And, he has done just that.

Taking on the captain’s armband to lead the way in the Ange Postecoglou era, Son has thrived with the added pressure and responsibility and appears to be back to his best.

With six goals in the opening eight games (Transfermarkt), Son is by far Spurs‘ top scorer and has been instrumental in helping the Lilywhites remain unbeaten in the early stages of the campaign.

Son has been handled carefully by Postecoglou, though, with fears over his fitness. The same precaution has seemingly not been taken by his international boss, Jurgen Klinsmann, who refused to rest Son during the recent clash with Vietnam.

Is Heung-min Son injured?

Despite concerns that Son may have picked up an injury when he was seen limping at half-time (Football.London), he completed the full 90 minutes and even scored for his country.

Speaking after the game, Son put any fears regarding his fitness to bed. He told Yonhap News Agency: “I hope it’s not too much. If you are worried about injuries due to the constant collisions and intense competition, you should not play this kind of football.

“Colliding like this is why I love football. I hit my thigh slightly in the first half, but it was not a big deal. I think playing full-time in today’s game will help me in terms of physical strength and performance as I return to my club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Just as we used to fear the worst watching Harry Kane play for England, Spurs fans are now praying Sonny comes back from international duty without any issues.

We have some big games coming up that can really help dictate the course of our season if we keep this momentum up, and Son is a vital part of that.

This comes after Son was benched for the friendly against Tunisia early in the international break, with Jurgen Klinsmann admitting there were question marks over his fitness (Yonhap News Agency).

Fortunately, Son was fit enough to play for South Korea, six days before Tottenham are back in Premier League action against Fulham next Monday.

But the winger certainly took a clattering from two Vietnam players after he slotted home following a nice one-two around the corner with his teammate.

Check out the goal below:

Spurs Web Opinion:

Fortunately, Son hopped up and was fine after the goal. Our captain getting injured in a friendly would certainly have been far from ideal.

Heung-min Son has admitted that he planned on checking his physical condition in South Korea training on Thursday.

The Tottenham forward was just named Premier League Player of the Month for September, but Ange Postecoglou has been managing his minutes throughout the season.

Son is often taken off with 15 to 20 minutes left on the clock, which was the case once again last weekend against Luton Town.

Heung-min Son is managing himself this season

While he jetted off for international duty earlier in the week, Son was only named on the bench for South Korea’s match against Tunisia today. Spurs will be thankful for that, seeing as the fixture was only a friendly.

Korea are due to play again on October 17 against Vietnam, but it is unclear whether Heung-min Son will start that match or not.

When talking about his fitness earlier in the week, Son toldย Donga: “I know many people are worried. I plan to participate in training today [Thursday]. I plan to check my physical condition through training. My condition is improving.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Son is not as young as he once was, and the explosive nature of his game does historically lend itself to injuries once players get into their later years. Postecoglou and Son himself are doing a great job managing his minutes so far this season. It’s always best to be safe than sorry.

Speaking to the press ahead of the upcoming international fixtures, South Korea boss Jurgen Klinsmann revealed he has no plans to rest Heung-min Son despite the Tottenham Hotspur star struggling for fitness lately.

Heung-min Son has enjoyed a fantastic start to his life as the new Tottenham captain. Not only is his side now sitting at the top of the Premier League table after going eight games unbeaten, but he himself has been at the heart of that success.

Under Ange Postecoglou, Son appears to be back to his best, and has contributed six goals already this campaign as he leads the line for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt).

There are concerns over the 31-year-old’s fitness, however. After suffering through much of last season with injury issues, Son has been playing through the pain again this year, it seems.

Son has been substituted in the last few games, and Postecoglou admitted this is because he is ‘monitoring’ his skipper’s fitness levels (Football.London).

Son will play for South Korea as normal

Now on international duty with South Korea for the games against Tunisia and Vietnam, many expected Son to be used sparingly, but that will not be the case according to his manager, Jurgen Klinsmann.

Klinsmann told Sportal Korea: “It is natural for European players to feel fatigued. It will be difficult to adjust to the time difference. Son Heung-min will be less tired, [as he has] no European competition [to play].

“The national team is the greatest honour a player can enjoy. I think overseas players will play 90 minutes just because of the anticipation of coming to Korea and playing a game.

“I will control it for a day or two, but I will give 100% in preparation and adjust the amount of training to give a good performance to the fans.”

On the idea of rotation, he added: “When I was a player, being called up to the national team felt like a holiday. If you talk to the players, none of them want to rest.

“It is important because they want to participate even a little bit… We will understand it carefully and make them give everything on the field. There is no rotation.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We could really do without any injuries from this international break, as we already have a few out. If anything were to happen to Sonny, we would be lacking real quality up top, but let’s just hope Klinsmann and Son know what they are doing.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has shown he can still be a valuable asset for the club, by impressing on international duty for Wales in the recent friendly against South Korea.

Ben Davies is now one of the longest-serving members of the Tottenham squad, having joined the club from Swansea in 2014.

The versatile defender has been a useful member of the Tottenham squad under various managers, and was particularly prominent during Antonio Conte‘s time at the club when he was utilised as a centre-back rather than his usual left-back role.

Ben Davies

Now, with Ange Postecoglou in charge of the Lilywhites, Davies has had to settle for two substitute appearances in the league so far this season. He did play the full 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup tie with Fulham recently, and was given the captain’s armband for the match.

This past weekend, Davies took to the field for his country and came up against Spurs teammate, Heung-min Son in the friendly clash between Wales and South Korea.

Davies is man-of-the-match for Wales

The press have been very impressed with Davies’ latest performance, as he kept his club captain quiet all night to help Wales to a 0-0 draw against the Asian side.

Davies was given a rating of 7 out of 10 and named the star man on the night by Wales Online, who wrote: “Felt like he was everywhere at times. Did his job defensively with minimal fuss and showed little fear in getting forward. A really good performance.”

According to Pundit Feed, Davies was “the most composed of the three Welsh centre-backs.” His display earned him an 8 out of 10 from that particular outlet.

Spurs Web Opinion

We are pretty fortunate to have such a reliable defender in our squad, and a player who appears to understand that he is essentially defensive cover rather than a first-team regular.

If one of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were to get injured, I would feel more comfortable using Ben Davies, than Eric Dier, that’s for sure.

Tottenham Hotspur may be without Heung-min Son for seven games in January and February of next year due to the Asian Cup, but only if South Korea make it all the way to the final.

It wasn’t the best of seasons for Son last year, with the 30-year-old struggling for form and confidence under Antonio Conte.

There was a slight improvement in his fortunes in the final few games of the 2022/23 campaign, but overall it was a sub-par showing from the Tottenham attacker.

Heung-min Son

(Photo by JUNG YEON-JE/AFP via Getty Images)

Goals were hard to come by for Son for much of the season, but he ended the campaign with 14 goals and six assists in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Son recently told TV Chosunย (as translated by journalistย Steve Han) that he had suffered from a hernia injury for much of the season which restricted his movement. He has since undergone surgery to resolve this.

Spurs will be hoping Heung-min Son can be a key player for them again in the forthcoming season, but they may have to make do without him in the New Year.

Asian Cup could keep Son busy until February

The delayed 2023 Asian Cup will now take place in Qatar between January 12 and February 10 2024 (FootballLondon).

South Korea have qualified for the 24-team tournament and, if Jurgen Klinsmann’s side go all the way, Tottenham could be without their star man for up to seven matches.

South Korea have group games against Malaysia, Jordan and Bahrain scheduled in, and will be hoping to have a shot at the top prize.

However, if they were to crash out in the group stages, Son could be back with Tottenham by the end of January to face Brentford.

If South Korea were to do well out in Qatar, and Spurs were to progress in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, they will likely be without Son for key games.

The South Korea captain could well be tied up and miss the FA Cup fourth round and both legs of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Here’s a rundown of the fixtures Son could miss in a worst-case scenario:

January 10 – Carabao Cup semi-final first leg
January 13 or 20 – Manchester United (A)
January 24 – Carabao Cup semi-final second leg
January 27 – FA Cup fourth round
January 30 – Brentford (A)
February 3 – Everton (A)
February 10 – Brighton (H)

Spurs Web Opinion

Obviously, we want Sonny to do well out there and do his country proud, but those are some key fixtures there and it would be a shame to lose him for so long.

Hopefully, we make some signings and have adequate squad cover by that point.

South Korea manager Jurgen Klinsmann has been discussing Heung-min Son’s recovery from injury, and said he hopes to see the national team captain on the field again in the next game.

Tottenham Hotspur endured a difficult season both on and off the pitch last season. Of all the Spurs squad, it was perhaps Son who suffered the sharpest decline in form in the 2022/23 campaign.

The 30-year-old ended the season with 14 goals and six assists in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Admittedly, Son did show some improvement in the final few games of the season. However, for much of the campaign, he looked a shadow of the player who won the Premier League Golden Boot award the year previous.

The root of the problems displayed by Son last term may well be the fact the player was suffering from injury for much of the season. Son himself confirmed this to TV Chosun recently [translated by Steve Han].

He said: โ€œI wondered a lot if I should even make this public, but I struggled with pain all season. I played through it for eight to nine months, but couldnโ€™t go on anymore, so I made the decision finally and underwent surgery.

โ€œEven for simple actions like passing or turning, every movement starts from your core muscles, but thatโ€™s exactly where my pain was. I was only able to do 60% of what could do at 100% [throughout the season].โ€

After missing out on the game against Peru last week, Son is on the bench for today’s international fixture against El Salvador as he continues his recovery from the surgery on his sports hernia.

Heung-min Son

Spurs’ Heung-min Son is getting better every day

South Korea manager Jurgen Klinsmann has provided an update on his Heung-min Son‘s fitness ahead of the game.

He told the press [via Sungmo Lee]: “Son looks better every day. He’ll not start tomorrow’s game, but I’m very positive he will come on as the game goes on.

“Son’s role is not only important on the field. Of course, he’s a goalscorer and we want goals, but his role is very important to carry this team for the Asian Cup in Qatar. His role off the field is as much as important for us, coaches.

“We have many situations to deal with, for example, Kim Min-jae is having military training, so to deal with these kinds of process, you need somebody like Sonny with experience to guide the players from a player’s perspective, so to have him on the side is crucial.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have every faith that when Son comes back from this injury he will be on fire again next season. Something clearly wasn’t right last year and getting over this fitness issue should be the key to Son getting back to his best.

South Korea head coach and Tottenham legend Jurgen Klinsmann has revealed that Son Heung-min will start on the bench for their friendly match against Peru on Friday since he is not yet 100 percent fit.

It was reported by Korea Herald earlier this week that Son was doubtful for the friendly against Peru after he was recovering from a recent sports hernia surgery.

Curiously, the publication revealed that the forward flew to his home country immediately after Spurs’ 4-1 victory against Leeds United on the final day of the season to undergo the operation.

That raised some suspicions over whether Son was playing through injury during the season, given that he looked well short of his best for much of the 2022-23 campaign.

Heung-min Son fitness update after surgery

Sure enough, Son himself confirmed that was the case in an interview with TV Chosun (as translated by journalist Steve Han) on Wednesday, revealing that he struggled with pain throughout the season and that the issue interfered with even basic movements like turning and passing.

Klinsmann has now confirmed that the South Korean captain is not fit enough to start against Peru but he insisted that the forward could play a part in the game with his country beginning their preparations for the Asian Cup in January 2024.

The 58-year-old said at a press conference (via journalist Sungmo Lee): “Son is not 100%. He’ll be on the bench. As he’s getting better every day after returning to South Korea, so there’s hope that he can play tomorrow. But we need to check his condition.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that this is a pointless international friendly, there is no reason for Klinsmann to risk Son even if there is a small doubt about his fitness. However, the 30-year-old is the sort of character who would be chomping at the bit to play every single game.

I can see him coming on for a late 20-minute cameo against the South American side considering they also play El Salvador just four days later.

PSG know they are going to lose their star man one way or another and would surely rather get a big transfer now than see him leave for nothing.

Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu has been speaking to South Korea teammate Heung-min Son about new Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou, and had only nice things to say about his former coach.

The 22-year-old attacker signed for the Scottish giants in January of this year, but Postecoglou has clearly had a positive impact on him in such a short space of time.

Oh was integral to Celtic’s charge to the domestic treble this year, contributing seven goals in 21 appearances since arriving in Scotland earlier this year (Transfermarkt).

Postecoglou’s parting gift to Celtic was to secure an historic treble, including a second successive SPL title. Indeed, wherever the 57-year-old has gone, he has been successful in winning trophies.

That is something Tottenham have struggled with for 15 years now, with their last taste of silverware coming in 2008 when they won the League Cup.

Many are hoping Ange Postecoglou can be the one to bring the good times back to North London, and at the very least give Spurs fans entertaining, attacking football once more.

Heung-min Son hears glowing review of Postecoglou

Oh certainly thinks that will be the case, as he revealed to Football Scotland what he has told South Korea captain Heung-min Son about his new Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Son apparently quizzed his teammate about what to expect from Postecoglou, and Oh said: “He asked me about Ange’s styleโ€”what he emphasises, his style of play.

“I’ve only played for Ange for half a year, but I already know that he’s tactically exceptional. I believe he’ll succeed.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am really excited to see how we play under Postecoglou, but by all accounts, it’s going to be fun at the very least.

We have some incredible attacking talent in our squad and it has been such a shame to see that squandered this season.

I have a feeling Sonny will thrive in this new set-up.

Speaking to The Sun about the fixture, Football Association of Wales chief executive Noel Mooney was full of praise for the upcoming opponents.

He said: “Many teams are tied up in Europe with qualifiers and it’s not always easy to get strong opposition during the few occasions we get the chance to play friendlies.

“So to have the likes of Son Heung-min โ€“ Ben Davies’ teammate at Spurs โ€“ and many other high-quality players coming to Cardiff is great for us.”

On the benefits of playing South Korea, Mooney added: “They had a really good World Cup getting to the knockout stage and it’s important we keep testing ourselves against different styles of football.

“South Korea offers us a really interesting chance to do that, and I’m sure we’ll have another great crowd to cheer on Cymru before the ‘Red Wall’ head for Riga a few days later [for the game against Latvia]”

Spurs Web Opinion

It will be interesting to see these two very different teams come up against one another for the first time, and the game should pose a great challenge for both sets of players.

The Taegeuk Warriors are one of the favourites to go all the way in the tournament, which will be held in Qatar.

The competition, which consists of 24 teams, is set to go ahead from January 12, 2024, to February, 10, which means that Spurs will miss Son for a critical juncture of the season.

The 30-year-old has not been at his best so far this campaign, having found the back of the net just seven times in the Premier League (Transfermarkt) but he has continued to be a mainstay in the starting eleven and came up with a superb goal against Brighton this weekend.

Spurs Web Opinion

Son will certainly not have another season as poor as the one he has had this time around and is guaranteed to be among the goals as long as the next Spurs manager plays him closer to goal rather than crippling him with defensive duties.

So, he will certainly be a big miss when he is gone and the club need to plan proactively during the summer transfer market to plan for the 30-year-old’s absence.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are keen to step up their pursuit of the South Korea star once again, after failing to land him previously.

It is thought Spurs could be willing to meet the ยฃ43 million release clause that will be active for two weeks in July to secure Kim’s signature.

Encouragingly, the player himself is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League (CalcioMercato). If Kim does want to play in England, there could be a line of suitors waiting to snap him up.

A report from The Times suggests Spurs are not the only Premier League side interested, with Liverpool and Manchester United circling the 26-year-old, too.

However, it is suggested that Tottenham may have a “slight advantage” over their Premier League rivals, and it’s all thanks to Heung-min Son.

Son is the South Korea captain and is thought to be a good friend of Kim’s. It seems Tottenham will hope their star attacker can persuade the Napoli defender to join him in North London.

Kim has 49 caps for South Korea and three goals for his country (Transfermarkt). There’s a chance then, that having that bond at international level could be the key to Spurs getting their man this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would absolutely love to see us sign Kim Min-jae, but it won’t be easy to persuade him to come to Spurs.

He looks set to win a title at Napoli and will be in the Champions League again next season.

As things stand, we face a real battle to qualify, and if we miss out on the top four it would be almost impossible to sign Kim, you’d think.

Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-min Son has told the Evening Standard that people at the club have filled him in on his new international manager Jurgen Klinsmann, and he’s heard nothing but good things.

Klinsmann was announced as the new head coach of South Korea at the end of last month, following former manager Paulo Bento’s departure after the World Cup in Qatar.

Tottenham legend Klinsmann had been without a job since leaving Hertha Berlin back in 2020.

The German will now lead South Korea into the next World Cup, which is likely to be Son’s last.

Son currently has 35 goals in 108 appearances for his country (Transfermarkt). He is also the current captain of South Korea.

The Tottenham link between Klinsmann and Son could well prove to be beneficial for Korea.

Klinsmann’s reputation clearly precedes him, and Son has been learning all about the former Tottenham icon ahead of the international break.

He said: “At Tottenham, we still have people who spent time with coach Klinsmann back in his playing days, and he has such a sterling reputation.

“I have only had brief conversations with him, but I could already tell he was a great man who cares so much about players.”

On what he has been hearing from those around him at club level, Son added: “Tottenham officials told me we have an exceptional coach for South Korea, and that has only raised my expectations.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This period before the next World Cup is likely to be Son’s last throw of the dice at international level, and hopefully he can strike up a good relationship with Klinsmann and the two can flourish together.

Klinsmann’s record as a coach is a little spotty, but he does seem to do better when the expectations are lower, so this could be a perfect fit.

Heung-min Son has kicked off Jurgen Klinsmann’s managerial reign of the South Korean national side by scoring the first goal after just ten minutes against Colombia.

The striker has experienced a difficult season for Tottenham Hotspur having scored just 10 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions at club level, having looked a shadow o him former self under Antonio Conte during the current campaign.

The 30-year-old received the ball from 30 yards out after Vargas in the Colombia goal was caught way out of position near to the touchline and Son took advantage by curling the ball into the empty net

He grabbed his second goal of the match on the cusp of half-time when he stepped up to take a free-kick and found the bottom corner.

The South Korean FA have announced their new manager and it seems Heung-min Son will be playing for Jurgen Klinsmann, a man familiar to many Tottenham Hotspur fans.

Klinsmann enjoyed an incredible playing career and managed to achieve a cult status among the Tottenham fanbase after two stints with the club in the 1990s.

He scored 38 goals in 66 appearances for the Lilywhites and provided 15 assists (Transfermarkt).

The German was prolific at international level, too, scoring 47 goals for his country across 108 caps (Transfermarkt). Klinsmann won the World Cup with Germany in 1990, and the European Championship in 1996, too.

He has not quite enjoyed as much success since his transition into management however, where he has taken charge of Germany, the USA, Bayern Munich, and Hertha Berlin.

Klinsmann has a nice challenge now though, as he will be overseeing the South Korea national team.

The move will see Klinsmann link up with another Spurs legend, as South Korea captain Heung-min Son prepares for life under a new manager at international level.

This comes after Paolo Bento stepped down from the job when Korea were defeated in the 2022 World Cup second round, a 4-1 defeat to Brazil.

The South Korean side performed better than most expected in Qatar, and there’s hope that the nation can build on that in time for the next World Cup in 2026.

Son will be doing his utmost to be at that World Cup, and add to his 108 caps and 35 goals for Korea in the meantime (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

This could be a really good move for all parties. The Spurs link between Klinsmann and Sonny should prove beneficial, and Klinsmann does seem to do better as a manager when the expectations are set a little lower.

If he can guide South Korea to the next World Cup, it will be very interesting to see what his side look like.

The South Korea boss for the Qatar World Cup, Paulo Bento, has explained to Sky Sports’ Football Daily how his star man Heung-min Son suffered to be at the tournament.

Son captained the South Korea side at the tournament, and while he was unable to add to his 35 goals at international level, he made it to 108 caps and even added an assist during the group stages (Transfermarkt).

Despite failing to win their opening two games, South Korea pulled off a brilliant win over Portugal in their final group game to qualify for the knockout stages.

That game saw Son provide a memorable assist as he carried the ball from his own half before laying on the perfect pass for Hwang Hee-chan to score a last-gasp winner.

South Korea ultimately succumbed to a heavy defeat by Brazil in the last-16 tie, losing 4-1 on the night. Nevertheless, it was a strong showing for the Asian side, who few expected to even get past the group stage.

On his Instagram, Son reflected on the tournament with an emotional post in which he admitted he wanted to do better. A quick look at the comments section would tell you Son did a great job, and has been celebrated as a hero by the South Korean fans.

According to his former national team manager Paulo Bento, who resigned from his post after their elimination, the 30-year-old gave everything to be at the World Cup despite his injury problems, and suffered for it.

Bento said: “He’s the one that suffered a lot and suffered more than other people. His desire to be with us.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We all know how passionate and determined Sonny is and there’s no doubting he played through the pain at the World Cup. He never quite got to his best, but he would rather be there and do what he can than miss out, and that spirit has to be commended.

Regardless, it was still a momentous tournament for the South Koreans. Their progress to the second round was celebrated by fans both in Qatar and Korea, and the whole team should be proud of the memories they created for those fans.

A particular highlight will be the last-gasp win against Portugal in the final group game, which sealed South Korea’s progress to the knockout stages. Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-min Son provided an incredible assist in that game for the all-important injury-time winner.

Earlier this week, Son took to social media to thank the fans for their support during the tournament. He also explained how hard he and his teammates had worked and how they wished they could have gone further in the competition.

It was an incredibly heartfelt and emotional post from Son, who clearly has a very strong connection with his fanbase. A closer look at the comments section on that post revealed another fan to add to the 30-year-old’s collection, though.

Neymar, the Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain attacker, commented on Son’s Instagram post with one word: “Legend.” Big words coming from one of the best players in the world right now.

Spurs Web Opinion

Neymar is absolutely right, Heung-min Son is a legend. He’s been an incredible servant for Tottenham Hotspur through the years and I’m sure all Spurs fans love him, and he is by far the biggest star in South Korea’s team, too. He may not have won trophies like other big-name players, but he should definitely be remembered as one of the greatest modern footballers.

Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-min Son has shared an emotional post on his Instagram account reflecting on his journey with South Korea at the 2022 World Cup.

It’s been a difficult start to the season for Son, who has struggled to recapture the form that won him the Premier League Golden Boot last season. He has just five goals this term for Spurs (Transfermarkt).

At international level, Son was unable to add to his tally of 35 goals for South Korea (Transfermarkt), but did provide one of the assists of the tournament to help his team through the group stages.

His blistering run and inch-perfect pass set up the goal which sealed the all-important win against Portugal to see South Korea make the knockout stages and was a real highlight of the country’s tournament.

Addressing his country and his fans on Instagram, Son shared some images from the World Cup and a lengthy message reflecting on the experience in Qatar.

He said: “I am writing this to thank you for all your support and interest. During four years, I have tried many things and ran forward towards my dream. Not every time there were good moments, but I think those bad moments made us stronger and made us the national team we are.

“We were able to overcome every moment with your constant support from behind! Our players worked so hard where they couldn’t be seen, and I thought it was an honour to be part of the South Korea team, and my body was broken.

On the journey at the World Cup, Son added: “I believe that the unforgettable World Cup was created because all the players and staff, including me, tried every second of every day. In addition, as a Korean citizen before becoming a football player I was able to feel once again how happy I am.”

He concluded the message by saying: “I really appreciate all the love you guys have sent. From now on, I will do my best to make Korea brighter, not only for myself, but also the Korean football team. I love and thank you Korea… Thank you for allowing me to stand here.”

Spurs Web Opinion

What a lovely message to his fans from Sonny there. He and his teammates did his country proud at the World Cup and although their journey may have ended sooner than he will have hoped, Son and the South Korean players can hold their heads high.

Tottenham teammates Richarlison and Heung-min Son went head-to-head last night in the knockouts of the World Cup, but a tweet from Richarlison after the game proves the pair are still good friends despite Brazil knocking South Korea out of the tournament.

Brazil comfortably defeated South Korea 4-1 on Monday evening to sail through to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup and it was an impressive display all-round from the South American team.

(Photo by ANP via Getty Images)

Goals from Vinicius Junior, a Neymar penalty, and a brilliant goal from Richarlison himself put the Samba side in control within 30 minutes, before a goal from West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta all but sealed the win before half-time.

South Korea did manage to pull a goal back in the second half, but were simply outclassed by superior opposition.

Richarlison is having an incredible tournament, and with three goals to his name already he is firmly in the running to win the Golden Boot in Qatar (Telegraph), especially if Brazil can go all the way as many expect.

For Heung-min Son, though, it’s heartbreak as his South Korea side exit the tournament now and the 30-year-old turns his attention to the second half of the season with Spurs.

In a touching social media post from Richarlison after the game, he offered condolences to his club teammate along with an image of him and Son embracing on the field.

He said: “I know how hard you fought to be here and that’s why you’re a hero to your people Sonny.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Both Sonny and Richarlison come across as two of the nicest people in the sport and it’s lovely to see Richarlison speaking so fondly of his teammate after the game. There’s clearly a great level of respect there and it just shows the togetherness of the Spurs squad right now that they care for each other so much despite being on different sides at the World Cup.

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Dele Alli has shared a message on his Instagram account congratulating South Korea star Heung-min Son on his World Cup victory.

It was a momentous day for Son as he captained his side to a dramatic 2-1 win over Portugal to see South Korea through to the knockout stages of the World Cup in Qatar. With Uruguay winning against Ghana, South Korea needed all three points to take second spot in Group H.

With the score poised at 1-1 heading into injury time, Son picked the ball up in his own half and went on a fantastic run before slotting in Hwang Hee-chan with a wonderful through ball, who applied a cool finish to give South Korea the win.

Emotions were high after the game, with images emerging of Son and his teammates in tears of joy after sealing qualification for the last 16.

Son’s assist was his first notable contribution to the World Cup so far, but he came good at just the right time. That was the 30-year-old’s 18th assist at international level, adding to his 35 goals in 109 appearances (Transfermarkt).

South Korea’s success was celebrated by many neutrals, and the scenes clearly caught the eye of Son’s former teammate Dele Alli, who took to social media to celebrate his friend’s big moment.

On his Instagram, Alli shared a picture of Son and his teammates celebrating after the final whistle, with the caption: “So happy for you my brother.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It was a huge moment for Sonny and hopefully, that can be a real spark to set his tournament alight now. It’s good to see how much love he is getting from fans, pundits, and teammates alike and it’s nice to see Dele supporting his friend like this. It’s just a shame he isn’t at the World Cup himself, but that ship has long sailed, unfortunately.
