The Daily Mail have claimed that Ryan Sessegnon could receive a surprise call-up for England’s World Cup squad after Ben Chilwell suffered a hamstring injury.
Sessegnon has come on leaps and bounds at left wing-back for Tottenham since Antonio Conte arrived at the club a year ago.
Even though the Spurs star has been a regular for England’s Under-21s over the last couple of years, he is yet to be capped by the Three Lions at the senior level.
However, if The Mail’s latest update is to be believed, that could be about to change after Chilwell sustained a hamstring injury during the closing stages of Chelsea’s Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.
The report states that the early indications are that the Blues star has suffered a tear, which would rule him out of Qatar.
It is explained that Sessegnon could thus be catapulted into Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad, with the Tottenham man reportedly being named in England’s extended 55-man squad for the World Cup last month.

The one thing that could work in Sessegnon’s favour is the fact that Southgate also prefers to play with a back three and wing-backs, which is a formation that the Tottenham man is well suited to.
However, I suspect that the England boss is likely to take an extra right-back to Qatar and potentially use Kieran Trippier as Luka Shaw’s cover at left wing-back. So, I do not see Sessegnon making the cut.
