Former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher has explained that Tottenham did not deserve a penalty against Liverpool this weekend, despite protests from the players (Sky Sports’ Football Daily).
It was a familiar tale for Antonio Conte and his players at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as they failed to find their feet quickly against a big six opponent, falling two goals behind Liverpool before they started to put on consistent pressure.
However, it has to be said that Tottenham at least offered more of a threat than in a lot of their other first 45 minutes of games this season. One particular moment came when the Lilywhites were 1-0 down and Ryan Sessegnon appeared to be pushed over in the box by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Despite appeals from the left-wing-back and his teammates, the referee waved away any appeals for a penalty and the VAR chose not to get involved.
When analysing the incident on Monday, Gallagher claimed it was more of a ‘nudge’ or a ‘lean’ rather than a ‘barge’ from Trent, which is why it was correctly not given.

Spurs Web Opinion:
I would say it looks more like a push in the back than anything else, to be honest. And I wouldn’t mind it not being given had we not seen similar stuff already given this season. It’s the inconsistencies with refereeing that annoys people more than anything.
