Emerson Royal has insisted that he is happy to be at Tottenham after his father and agent, Emerson Zulu, said that his son wants to make the step up to a team that can challenge for trophies this summer.

For the majority of Antonio Conte’s time at Tottenham, Emerson had struggled to adapt to the demands of the right wing-back role and it came as a surprise to Spurs fans when the club opted to keep him in January and offload Matt Doherty on a free to Atletico Madrid instead.

However, the 23-year-old did manage to turn his Tottenham career around and won the fans over with some of the impressive displays he subsequently delivered, including in the win over Manchester City back in February.

The right-back is expected to return to action in two weeks after suffering a knee injury during Brazil’s clash against Morocco last month (Football.London).

It now appears that he has to do some damage control after his father made quite an outlandish statement on Monday over his future.

Zulu said on the Charla Podcast (as translated by AS) that his son wants to leave Tottenham for a bigger club this summer and remarked that the former Real Betis man would fit in well at Real Madrid.

He said: “There is a strong possibility that Emerson will leave Tottenham. We want that,”

Responding to those comments, Royal has now told talkSPORT (via Fabrizio Romano): “I have never spoken to him about it and I have always made it clear that I am happy at Tottenham.”

It is unfortunate for Emerson that his father seemingly decided to make a private conversation with his son, public. There is nothing wrong with having the ambition of becoming the best player one can be and playing for a club such as Real Madrid one day.
