Chelsea have offered striker Timo Werner on loan to RB Leipzig in an attempt to sign defender Josko Gvardiol, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The journalist claimed the Blues made a fresh attempt to sign Gvardiol but have not been successful with their proposal, with Leipzig keen to keep him on board at the club.
Chelsea’s new interest comes after Tottenham took a liking to the Croatia international earlier this summer as they looked to add a left-sided central defender to Antonio Conte’s squad (The Athletic).
Journalist Pete O’Rourke claimed the 20-year-old was among Spurs’ top targets (GiveMeSport) while Alasdair Gold asserted he headed a shortlist of candidates.
Gvardiol put together a strong first season with Leipzig after his move from Dinamo Zagreb, emerging as one of the top defensive talents in the Bundesliga.
He made 45 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt) and was a key man as the club secured a top-four finish to seal their spot in the Champions League.

Gvardiol is deservedly attracting attention this summer from all the top clubs and it is no surprise after the recent season he had. But Chelsea look to be facing the same difficulties other clubs have encountered already with Leipzig understandably keen to keep one of their prized assets.
