Tottenham’s Under-18s began the season in ideal fashion as they thumped West Ham 4-1 away from home on Saturday (Tottenhamhotspur.com).

In the team’s first competitive league match since the Under-18s Premier League was cancelled back February, the Spurs youngsters put in an extremely accomplished display as the Hammers struggled to cope with the away side’s movement and creativity.

Summer signing, Alfie Devine recorded his first competitive start for the Under-18s and controlled the game from the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, striker Dane Scarlett was involved in all four goals with a brace and two assists.

The Lilywhites took the lead just 2 minutes into the game as Kallum Cesay scored a beauty from the edge of the box.

Michael Forbes then headed home the equaliser just before the half-hour mark but Spurs responded swiftly as Divine beat four West Ham players before squaring for Scarlett to tap home.

The striker then converted from the penalty spot after being bought down in the box at the start of the second half before Tarrelle Whittaker stepped off the bench to put the icing on the cake for the away side with a fourth.

There are several extremely promising talents in the development squad at the moment who look capable of following in the footsteps of the likes of Japhet Tanganga and Dennis Cirkin and getting an opportunity with the first team over the next couple of years. Mourinho has certainly shown that he is willing to give youngsters an opportunity if they are ready. The fact that the Spurs boss used Devine and Scarlett in pre-season suggests that he rates them highly.
