Joe Rodon has admitted that he is thoroughly enjoying his time at Leeds United, and feels he is improving with each game that he plays.

Rodon will be hoping to get his career back on track on loan at Leeds this season after struggling to get much of a look-in at Tottenham since joining the club three years ago.

The centre-back’s loan spell at Rennes last season did not go according to plan but he has seemingly made a promising start to his time at Elland Road.

The 26-year-old has quickly established himself as a mainstay in Daniel Farke’s backline and has received plenty of praise for some of his displays for the Whites (LeedsLive).

Rodon is enjoying his time with Leeds United

Rodon also starred for Wales during the international break and got rave reviews for his solid performance in the Dragons’ 2-1 win over Croatia at the Cardiff City Stadium (Wales Online).

The former Swansea man has now seemingly thrown a hint about his future by admitting that he is thoroughly enjoying his football.

The Tottenham star said (via The Leeds Press): “I am really enjoying it here. As the weeks have gone on, it has got better and better for me, and for the group as well.

“I feel we are improving week by week and that is important, with the targets and journey we are on, we’re getting better each game and the results are coming our way.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Like Harry Winks, Rodon needed regular game time this season to get his career back on track and he made the right decision by dropping down to the Championship.

Tottenham will be happy to sanction the centre-back’s permanent sale to Leeds in January or next summer, given that his contract with Spurs runs out in 2025.

Joe Rodon has received rave reviews in the Welsh press after delivering an impressive display in their big win over Croatia on Sunday.

Joe Rodon continues to impress for Leeds and Wales

Rodon took his club form to the international scene, delivering a mature display at the back for Wales, who overcame Croatia 2-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium to pick up three crucial points in their Euro qualifier.

The on-loan Spurs man, who started in the middle of a back three that also consisted of Ben Davies, has been getting some positive press on the back of the performance.

Wales Online gave Rodon a rating of eight out of 10 and wrote about the centre-back: “Made a couple of really good defensive interventions. Dug in to help his side get the job done. Solid at the back all night.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Rodon’s decision to drop back down to the Championship in the summer was absolutely the right one as he needed regular game time under his belt to get his career back on track. Unsurprisingly, the 25-year-old appears to be getting better with each game that he plays.

The international break is here, and Tottenham Hotspur have a number of players involved with their respective countries. Here’s when and where each player will feature.

Tottenham go into the international break at the top of the Premier League table after an incredible start to the season under Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss has bid farewell to a large portion of his squad for the next couple of weeks, as various players head out to join up with their national squads.

There are Euro 2024 qualifiers, friendly matches, youth squad action, and even some World Cup 2026 qualifiers on the way in the coming days.

On Wednesday, Ben Davies captained Wales to a 4-0 win over Gibraltar at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground. The Spurs defender even opened the scoring on the night, nodding home from three yards out.

Meanwhile, Tottenham youngsters Luca Gunter and Ashley Phillips played the full 90 minutes as England U19s drew 0-0 with Montenegro. Alfie Dorrington was an unused substitute for the game, while Jamie Donley didn’t make the matchday squad.

Fellow youngster, Will Andiyapan, was in action for Wales U19s, playing the full 90 minutes in another 0-0 draw, against Austria.

Alasdair Gold has compiled his regular roundup of all the Spurs players currently out on loan, including Tanguy Ndombele’s first start for Galatasaray, a couple of wins for Joe Rodon at Leeds United, and a match-winning goal for Troy Parrott.

The crop of first-team players at Tottenham Hotspur are flying high right now, with an eight-game unbeaten run at the start of the campaign. Ange Postecoglou’s side are now top of the Premier League table going into the international break.

While players like Heung-min Son, James Maddison, and Cristian Romero are flourishing in North London, there are a number of players still attached to the club who are plying their trade elsewhere this season.

Whether it be young players looking for valuable first-team experience, or fringe players attempting to prove their worth and secure a permanent move away from Tottenham, all the players out on loan right now have something to work towards.

How are the Spurs loanees performing this week?

In his loan report for Football.London, Alasdair Gold shares what the various Spurs loanees have been up to over the last week.

There was a “big moment” for Tanguy Ndombele this week, with the Frenchman starting for the first time for Galatasaray. He played 62 minutes against Antalyaspor, and also got a six-minute substitute appearance against Manchester United in the Champions League in midweek.

It’s Davinson Sanchez who is stealing the headlines out in Turkey, however. The former Spurs man bagged his first goal for Galatasaray in the 2-0 win over Antalyaspor, and registered two assists in the 3-2 win over Manchester United.

Joe Rodon is back from suspension, and getting praise once again for his performances in the heart of the Leeds United defence. The Welshman featured in back-to-back wins for the Championship side, against QPR and Bristol City, with LeedsLive describing him as “very solid.”

His teammate, Djed Spence, is still out injured for Leeds. As are both Sergio Reguilon at Manchester United, and Japhet Tanganga at Augsburg. The latter, however, is expected to be back in action later this month.

Moving on to the younger talent out and about gaining experience, Troy Parrott is having a great time out in Holland with Excelsior Rotterdam. The 21-year-old scored in back-to-back games recently, including a late winner in the Rotterdam derby, but he is still waiting for his first start.

Dane Scarlett, meanwhile, is having to be very “patient” at Ipswich Town. With the club “absolutely flying” in the Championship, the Spurs man is finding it difficult to break into the team, but did get a ten-minute cameo appearance in the win over Hull City in midweek.

And finally, Alfie Devine has been “drawing plenty of praise” during his time with League One outfit Port Vale. In midweek, the youngster started the game against Bristol Rovers but was replaced at half-time after picking up a yellow card.

Devine then got another 57 minutes under his belt after coming on as a substitute in the first half against Portsmouth, replacing an injured teammate for the defeat at Fratton Park.

Spurs Web Opinion

Plenty of positives this week, with both Joe Rodon potentially pushing himself closer to a permanent switch to Leeds, and Ndombele finally getting his first start.

Parrott continues to impress in the Netherlands and is doing his reputation no harm. But, I do worry about Dane Scarlett at Ipswich. If he doesn’t get a chance soon, we may have to reconsider that agreement.

Alasdair Gold has provided his regular round-up of all the Tottenham Hotspur players who are out on loan right now. Headlines include Tanguy Ndombele’s fitness issues, Joe Rodon picking up a red card, and Troy Parrott getting on the scoresheet.

With a number of new faces arriving at the club this summer, Ange Postecoglou needed to give his squad some balance by shipping players out.

There was, and still is, a great number of peripheral figures at Tottenham whose futures lie elsewhere, but who could not seal a permanent move away this summer. Therefore, a loan move serves the interest of all parties.

Likewise, a handful of young players have temporarily left the club for the season in an effort to gain valuable experience and stake their claim on a first-team spot at Spurs.

What’s going on with the Spurs loanees?

In his report for Football.London, Alasdair Gold shares what all the Spurs loanees have been getting up to, and what has been said about them.

First up is Tanguy Ndombele, who continues to struggle. The Frenchman is yet to start a game for Galatasaray and has been hit with some pretty heavy criticism by Sky Sports’ Batuhan Karadeniz, who claimed the midfielder needed a nutritionist (via Super Haber).

Conversely, Sergio Reguilón is seemingly enjoying life at Manchester United right now. The Spaniard played a part in the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek, and also got 79 minutes under his belt against Burnley at the weekend. The 26-year-old was even named Manchester United’s “best player” for the game in Germany (Manchester Evening News).

Joe Rodon has been “earning plenty of plaudits” during his loan spell at Leeds United, but was sent off in a 0-0 draw against Hull in midweek.

Japhet Tanganga is currently out injured, but is expected to return to action for Augsburg next month.

Perhaps the highlight of the loan players this week, is Troy Parrott. The young Irishman got himself off the mark for Excelsior Rotterdam with a goal in the 88th minute.

Gold describes how Parrott “received the ball on the edge of the box and curled a beautiful shot into the top right corner, leaving the goalkeeper helplessly watching on.”

Finally, two of Tottenham’s most promising young players continue their development on loan with substitute appearances for Dane Scarlett and Alfie Devine.

The former played 12 minutes at the weekend and 19 minutes in midweek, but it is thought “those minutes will continue to rack up” as his Ipswich manager is a “big admirer.”

Devine, meanwhile, played just over an hour for Port Vale in midweek, but was relegated to the bench for the weekend’s action. However, it is the “early steps” of his career, and he has received “plenty of praise” while on loan with the League One side so far.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s great to hear Troy Parrott has got his first goal, and hopefully, it’s the first of many. Dane Scarlett is one I’m watching closely, as this will be a real test for him in the Championship.

As for Tanguy Ndombele, it just keeps getting worse and worse, and he is most definitely a lost cause now.

Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has shared an update on various players the club loaned out this season, including Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga, and Alfie Devine.

In a summer of great upheaval for Spurs, seven new faces arrived through the door at the North London club. With so many new signings, there had to be some outgoings to balance the books and keep the squad from becoming bloated.

Some fans have been disappointed with the club’s inability to sell fringe players this summer, with Harry Winks and Davinson Sanchez the only two peripheral squad players who left the club permanently during the transfer window.

However, plenty of players did leave the club on loan this summer. Youngsters like Alfie Devine, Dane Scarlett, and Troy Parrott all secured moves to ensure they play more first-team football this year, while more experienced heads such as Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga moved on, too.

What have the Spurs loanees been up to recently?

In his regular piece for Football.London, Alasdair Gold had plenty to say about all those players and more.

Gold claims Joe Rodon is “earning plenty of plaudits” at Leeds United so far this season and was given special “praise for his role in keeping a clean sheet” at the weekend. His teammate, Djed Spence, is now out of action for eight weeks with a knee injury.

Meanwhile, over in Turkey, Tanguy Ndombele came off the bench for Galatasaray and played 15 minutes in a 4-2 win over Samsunspor.

Despite not doing anything of particular note in that appearance, it is said that Ndombele will now be “looking to play a part” in his new side’s opening Champions League game this week.

In the Premier League, Sergio Reguilon made his debut for Manchester United and played 85 minutes of the defeat to Brighton. The Spaniard will be hoping for a better result next time out.

As for Tanganga, he is yet to recover from a knee injury and has not featured for Augsburg so far this season. That injury will not be helped by a reported accident at the training ground where the defender fell off a bicycle.

Japhet Tanganga

A player who has made it onto the pitch, however, is Troy Parrot, who “got more game time under his belt,” this weekend, albeit a 19-minute substitute appearance in a 0-0 draw for Excelsior Rotterdam.

Alfie Devine is faring much better at League One side Port Vale. Devine was handed a start by his new side after his “heroics” in the previous game where he provided an assist and scored a penalty.

This time out, the youngster played 75 minutes in a 1-0 win for the high-fliers, and made a “crucial last-ditch tackle” early in the game.

And finally, Dane Scarlett “again had to watch on as an unused substitute” for Ipswich Town as they defeated fellow promoted side, Sheffield Wednesday at the Hillsborough stadium.

Gold claims Scarlett is “going to have to be patient” but reiterates that “big things” are expected when he the young striker does get his chance.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s great to see both Joe Rodon and Alfie Devine performing well on loan. While the former may never return to Spurs, Devine has a bright future at the club and this spell of regular football will help his development hugely. Hopefully, Dane Scarlett can get an opportunity soon and show what he can do, too.

Joe Rodon has received plenty of praise for his composed defensive showing in Leeds United’s win over Millwall on Sunday.

Rodon will be hoping to get his career back on track on loan at Leeds after struggling to get much of a look-in at Tottenham since joining the club three years ago.

The centre-back’s loan spell at Rennes last season did not go according to plan but he has seemingly made a promising start to his time at Elland Road.

The Wales international started for Daniel Farke’s men at The Den as they came away with a much-needed 3-0 win, which was just the Whites’ second victory of the Championship campaign in six matches.

The game was much more closely contested than it appears, with Leeds having to defend a 1-0 lead until the 77th minute before a couple of late strikes saw them put the game beyond the home side.

Joe Rodon was Man of the Match for Leeds United

Rodon received plenty of praise for his performance, with former Leeds defender Jon Newsome describing the on-loan Spurs star’s performance as ‘outstanding’.

He told BBC Radio Leeds “Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding. Joe Rodon was Man of the Match for me. He got his head on everything. Was a different class. Really really was.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Rodon did have a rusty start to the season, which was to be expected, given that he has not played much football over recent years, but the centre-back now appears to be getting into his grove and showcasing the kind of quality we saw from him at Swansea.

Even though the defender established himself as a mainstay in Leeds’ backline, having started all of the club’s last three matches, his spell at Elland Road appears to have got off to a shaky start.

Leeds Live gave the on-loan Tottenham man a rating of 6/10 for his display in the 0-0 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday, with the outlet suggesting that the Wales international has plenty of room for improvement.

Rodon and Spence are easing their way into Leeds life

The publication wrote about Rodon’s performance: “Still feels like he is playing his way into some rhythm after such a minimal pre-season. First touch and judgement seem rusty.”

Meanwhile, Djed Spence came on for his Leeds debut in the dying stages of the game, replacing the experienced Luke Ayling in the 82nd minute.

Leeds Live wrote about the 23-year-old: “Too late for a mark, but a very good first impression at right-back in the little time he had. Looked rapid and strong on the ball.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is to be expected that Rodon would be a little rusty, having not played much football over the last couple of years. Both he and Spence would need a run of starts to get up to speed as the Championship can be extremely demanding physically.

Joe Rodon says he did not have a close personal relationship with the managers during his time at Tottenham.

There was plenty of excitement about Rodon’s arrival at Tottenham back in 2020, with the centre-back having been widely thought of as one the best young defenders in the Championship during his time at Swansea.

Although the Welshman did show glimpses of promise, especially during his first season at Spurs, he never quite managed to get regular game time at the North London club.

The centre-back was shipped out on loan to Rennes last season and he has now returned to the Championship on a temporary deal as he attempts to help Leeds bounce straight back up to the top flight.

Rodon matured with a lack of manager relationship

The 25-year-old worked with three different managers at Tottenham in Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, but he admitted that he did not really have a close bond with any of them as he did at the Liberty Stadium.

Rodon told Leeds’ official podcast: “At Swansea, I did have a close relationship with the manager, but when I went to Spurs it was kind of on your own, I learnt a lot in that period. It is more on your own and by yourself.

“I think coming back here, coming to Leeds, and having the manager has been brilliant with me since I have been through the door and it’s nice to have that relationship again. To feel like you are part of it and want it.

“At Tottenham, I think I learned to become a man in the environment and handling being on my own and maturing that side.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Rodon appears to be a confidence player who needs an arm around his shoulder. He evidently struggled to showcase his best when he did not feel trusted by the manager.

While he is perhaps not good enough for a team with Champions League aspirations, he now has a chance to prove himself again at Elland Road and potentially work his way up to the Premier League next season.

Football Insider have claimed that Joe Rodon is now having his medical at Elland Road ahead of sealing a temporary move to Leeds United.

Ange Postecoglou is expected to make wholesale changes at central defence this summer and it has been widely reported over the last few weeks that Rodon would be one of several centre-backs offloaded by the club this summer (The Times).

The Wales international has failed to live up to his potential since his £11m switch from Swansea City three years ago and had a disappointing loan campaign at Rennes during the 2022-23 season.

Spurs will get at least £1m for Joe Rodon loan

The Daily Telegraph’s Mike McGrath first broke the news on Tuesday evening that Leeds had agreed a deal with Spurs to sign the centre-back on a season-long loan deal.

Football Insider have now also backed up that claim, revealing that the recently relegated side will pay a seven-figure loan fee to take Rodon for the season.

The publication added that the Welshman is currently having his medical at the club and should link up with Daniel Farke’s squad if he passes the tests.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is a good move for Rodon as he needs to prioritise regular game time. Farke’s style of play will suit the 25-year-old and he might have several suitors next summer if he impresses for Leeds and helps them jump straight back up to the Premier League.

Alasdair Gold has revealed in his latest column on Football.London that Tottenham are now willing to offload Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga, Sergio Reguilon and Djed Spence.

Tottenham were expected to make wholesale changes to their backline this summer, and that now appears to be materialising with Ange Postecoglou hinting on Sunday that Micky van de Ven will not be the only centre-back to arrive through the door at Hotspur Way this summer (Football.London).

Postecoglou also confirmed in his press conference that there will be several exits over the coming weeks since the squad is quite bloated at the moment.

Tottenham are looking to overhaul defensive options

While it has been well documented over recent weeks that Sanchez is expected to leave, Gold has now revealed that his fellow centre-backs Rodon and Tanganga are also expected to head through the exit door.

The journalist assets that Tottenham are now also listening to offers for Reguilon and Spence.

Spurs Web Opinion

It was always clear that Sanchez, Rodon, Tanganga and Reguilon were going to be offloaded this summer and it appears as if Spence has failed to win over Postecoglou during pre-season, with the Australian seemingly happy with Porro and Emerson as his options at right-back.

The Telegraph have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are willing to offer any of Djed Spence, Joe Rodon and Bryan Gil to Nottingham Forest as a part of a deal to sign Brennan Johnson.

Johnson shot to the limelight during the 2021-22 campaign, with the youngster establishing himself as a regular in the Forest starting eleven and playing a key role in the club’s promotion to the top flight.

The attacking midfielder had no issues making the step up to the Premier League last season, managing 10 goals and three assists across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

This is not the first time that the 22-year-old has been mooted as a target for Spurs, with Football Insider reporting back in April that the Lilywhites were keeping tabs on the player.

The Daily Mail also subsequently stated last month that Johnson was on Tottenham’s radar but the publication asserted that North London club would be reluctant to meet Forest’s £50m valuation of the youngster.

Spurs exploring a part-exchange deal for Johnson

If The Telegraph’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs have now come up with a strategy to bring down the price by offering some of their players to Forest.

The report states that Tottenham ‘remain interested’ in Johnson and are now ‘weighing up’ an offer for the versatile attacker.

The outlet claim that Spurs have contacted Forest and given them a choice of signing Spence, Rodon and Gil as part of any deal for the Wales international.

Spurs Web Opinion

While I can understand Spurs offering Spence and Rodon, I am surprised that the club are willing to offload Gil. The Spaniard’s characteristics suit the way Postecoglou wants to play and I can see the winger thriving under the Australian if he gets opportunities.

The clearout at Tottenham Hotspur looks to have begun with out of favour central defender Joe Rodon on his way to Leeds United on a season-long loan deal.

The Welsh international was part of Ange Postecoglou‘s squad for the pre-season tour of Asia-Pacific but did not see a minute of action in the fixtures against West Ham United and Lion City Sailors.

Rodon was also omitted from the Australian’s squad for Sunday’s home match against Shakhtar Donetsk and was not part of the team which flew to Barcelona for yesterday’s 4-2 defeat in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

Joe Rodon will join Leeds United on loan

The Telegraph football reporter Mike McGrath took to social media o reveal news of the move and claimed the move will be confirmed in the coming days.

Leeds, who suffered relegation to the Championship on the final day of last season having failed to beat Tottenham and see other results go their way had a rude awakening to their first fixture back in England’s second tier last weekend when they had to come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Cardiff City.

McGrath wrote on Twitter/X: “Tottenham have agreed a deal for Wales centre-back Joe Rodon to join Leeds on a season-long loan. Formalities of deal to follow in coming days.”

SpursWeb Opinion

With Tottenham’s dressing room becoming even more crowded, following the arrivals of Micky van de Ven and Alejo Veliz, it was only a matter of time before some of the fringe players are sent packing for the season ahead.

Rodon’s loan spell at Rennes last season was also something of a frustration having failed to hold down a consistent place in the starting eleven of the Ligue 1 outfit and will now look to kick-start his career back in England at Leeds.

Joe Rodon has been told he should find a new club and leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

New Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is keen to sign at least one new centre-back this summer (90 Min) and the Australian is also planning a big clearout of his squad, too (Telegraph).

Journalist Paul Gilmour has told the Last Word on Spurs podcast that Joe Rodon would be ‘vulnerable’ and could leave Spurs this year.

After spending last year on loan at French side Rennes, Rodon has returned to North London for pre-season. However, he has struggled to force his way into Postecoglou’s plans and has apparently been ‘frozen out’ by the coach (Football.London).

Rodon is now widely believed to be one of the players leaving the club (Evening Standard) having failed to establish himself at Spurs in the three years since he joined the Lilywhites.

Joe Rodon is free to leave Spurs

According to the latest from the Evening Standard, Rodon has now been told by Spurs that he is free to move on and should start looking for a new club.

The report mentions how Tottenham are still trying to “offload” existing defenders from their squad, with Davinson Sanchez and Rodon cited as the two players who the club are keen to move on.

It is thought both have been “told they can find a new club” this summer. It is not yet known which clubs, if any, will come in for Rodon, but it appears he has reached the end of the road at Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Joe Rodon has little chance of a future at Tottenham now, and it would be in the interest of all parties if he moved on this summer.

We probably won’t be able to fetch much in the way of a transfer fee, but anything is better than having a player rotting in the reserves or constantly out on loan.

Much to the frustration of some Tottenham fans, the club are yet to sign any centre-backs this summer but it now looks like some outgoings might be just around the corner.

Postecoglou himself confirmed on Tuesday that Davinson Sanchez is exploring his options (Charlie Eccleshare).

Rodon could now be on his way out of Tottenham

Gold has now revealed that Rodon is expected to follow Sanchez out of the door this summer.

He explains that the centre-back has been ‘seemingly frozen out’ under Postecoglou, with the Wales international allegedly being forced to train with those players coming back from injury and those who are not expected to feature in matches.

The journalist states that the former Swansea man has not been part of the practice matches in the training ground in Australia, Thailand and Singapore.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is not surprising that Postecoglou does not see Rodon as part of his plans on the back of the 25-year-old’s disappointing loan spell at Rennes.

Apart from the newly promoted sides like Luton Town, I cannot see any other Premier League side vying for the Welshman’s signature this summer.

Of course, with players hopefully set to come in, there will need to be some outgoings to make room. Postecoglou is also widely believed to be planning a number of sales to refresh his squad (Telegraph).

Former Spurs player Alan Hutton has recently claimed there were ‘question marks’ over the likes of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, and Ben Davies.

Hutton also suggested it may be time for Japhet Tanganga to move on (Football Insider).

Rodon and Tanganga could go this summer

It seems no defender in the Spurs squad is safe during this transfer window, as Paul Gilmour has now posited the idea that Tanganga could be on his way out, along with Joe Rodon.

Gilmour told the Last Word on Spurs podcast: “Some of the names, [Joe] Rodon and [Japhet] Tanganga, you get that feeling that they’d be vulnerable as well to a sale.

“But again, I keep going back to this point at this stage of pre-season, there will be a lot of people trying to impress and so what we don’t know yet is the emergence of great performances from somebody that Ange Postecoglou thinks, ‘Right, you can play a role in my system.'”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a shame as both Tanganga and Rodon are talented players who have waited patiently for their chance at Tottenham.

Neither player has ever really been given ample opportunity to show what they can do consistently, but it seems they are just not at the level required here. Unless anything changes in pre-season, I can see them both moving on in search of first-team football.

From last summer, Tottenham have been crying out, if not desperately screaming out, for a new centre-back. A player to compliment Cristian Romero at the back and take our defence to the next level.

The links with Tapsoba and Van Der Ven had continued to play out in the most frustrating transfer pantomime of the summer (Standard) until a deal for the Dutchman now looks to be over the line, and have also confirmed the signing of Ashley Phillips, a player they have been interested in for a while.

Ashley Phillips

(Photo by Dave Howarth – CameraSport via Getty Images)

He seems to be an impressive talent and his former manager Tony Mowbray described him in these terms (Standard): “He’s 6ft 4in, he’s fast, mobile and can pass it really well. He can use both feet, he’s composed. Ash is just a phenomenal young boy. If you were to create a defender in the mould of how you would want one, this kid has got every attribute.”

However, it needs to be stated categorically. We should not see Phillips in the first team this season – for numerous reasons.

Primarily, young players should be introduced to the first team when things are settled. Stability helps create an environment in which new players can thrive. Look how good Kevin Wimmer looked next to Toby or Jan, compared to his performances at Stoke.

At the moment, the personnel compromising Spurs’ backline for our first game against Brentford is an absolute lottery – at least until van den Ven is confirmed. Add an eighteen-year-old to that maelstrom and you’re asking for trouble. Once things are settled, then would be the time to introduce Phillips to the first team squad.

Secondly, we need to learn from our mistakes. Over recent years we have had two promising centre-backs emerge in Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon. It is fair to say that neither, especially Rodon, look close to starting in the first team any time soon.

When he burst on the scene, there was a lot to like about Tanganga, but his career has stalled – admittedly due to injury in part – but also due to lack of game time. He is now 24 and has made 27 Premier League appearances in the last four seasons (SofaScore).

It would have served him, and the club, so much better if we had sent him out on loan to learn his trade either to a lower-level Premier League club or to a side in the Championship.

When Oliver Skipp went on loan to Norwich it was the making of him and he came back ready for the Premier League, whether it will be with Tottenham long term or not remains to be seen, but he is definitely a Premier League player.

Loan Ashley Phillips out so he can actually thrive

If we could loan Phillips out, I am sure there will be multiple takers. However, it is essential that he plays week in and week out in a team that plays good football and are already settled.

It might seem a bold call, but even a club like Bolton or Portsmouth, who play possession football, would be a great education for the player (WhoScored).

Another benefit of a loan is the fact that he will not be playing academy football.

At the Queen Elizabeth Stadium last month, Spurs u21s played out a 0-0 draw with Enfield Town from the Isthmian League. It was clear from the first minute that in terms of touch and technique, the Tottenham players were far superior. Even in the way they moved, they were more graceful and elegant.

Yet they struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities. The nous and physicality of the Town players, negated the superior technique of the Spurs youngsters.

Indeed, in the second half, the Town striker Beckles-Richards gave the centre-backs a torrid time with his power and direct, clever running. You could see they were not used to playing football that way with grown men.

The best example for this argument is Dele Alli. By the time he was ready to play for Tottenham, he had amassed 88 games for MK Dons in League 1 (FotMob), meaning he was more rounded and ready for Premier League football. He had combined excellent technique with physicality and gameplay knowledge.

The signing of Phillips is a positive one. He is a player who appears to have a high ceiling, but it is essential that Tottenham ensure there is a positive pathway for him over the next few years to ensure he maximises his potential.

As confirmed by other outlets over recent weeks, the report states that Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are expected to lead the mass exodus from Spurs this summer.

Lloris is thought to want a new challenge after eleven years at the club while Perisic is said to be on the radar of a whole host of clubs across the continent.

It is claimed both the Frenchman and Croat, who have one year left on their deals, could seek compensation from Spurs to leave this summer.

Hojbjerg is also said to be on the radars of several European clubs, including Atletico Madrid, with the Dane wanting to explore other opportunities after three years at N17.

Tottenham want to make a big profit on Hojbjerg

It is alleged that the Lilywhites will demand a significantly higher fee for the 27-year-old than the £15m they paid to sign him from Southampton three years ago.

In addition to these players, Ange Postecoglou’s men are also reportedly listening to offers for Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon, Ryan Sessegnon, Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is quite interesting to note that the names of Japhet Tanganga and Tanguy Ndombele are not part of this list, which suggests that Postecoglou is perhaps willing to give both players a chance to impress during pre-season and prove that they can be part of his plans.

The Welshman made a decent start to his loan spell in Stade Rennais last season but he spent much of the second half of the campaign warming the bench.

The former Swansea man will find a new manager at Hotspur Way in Ange Postecoglou when he returns for pre-season but it has been suggested that the defender’s days at the North London club could already be numbered.

The Athletic reported last week that Rodon is one of around ten players who are expected to be offloaded this summer as part of a mass clear-out at Tottenham.

Rodon is proving popular in the transfer market

Gold has now confirmed that the 25-year-old will be one of the centre-backs sacrificed by Spurs this summer, along with Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga.

The journalist asserts that Rodon has already attracted interest, with clubs from the Premier League and Ligue 1 both alleged to be keen on snapping him up.

I am quite surprised to hear that Premier League clubs are interested in Rodon on the back of his struggles to get game time at Rennes.

I suspect the newly promoted clubs such as Luton Town might be the ones who are looking at him.

I personally believe that the 25-year-old should do what Winks did and drop down to the Championship as he needs consistent game time over the next 12 months to get his career back on track and to rebuild his confidence.

Joe Rodon will have important decisions to make this summer about his future, and Wales boss Robert Page has offered an insight into what the player will prioritise if given the choice.

Since joining Tottenham in 2020, Rodon has barely been given a chance in the first team at Spurs. He has just 24 appearances for the Lilywhites during his time in North London (Transfermarkt).

The Welshman spent the 2022/23 campaign in France on loan at Stade Rennais. Despite a promising start to his time in Ligue 1, Rodon ended up making only 22 appearances for Rennes, and was only used twice in the final 15 games of the season (Transfermarkt).

It will come as no surprise, then, that Rennes have not taken up the option to sign Rodon on a permanent basis after his loan spell came to an end.

Now back at Tottenham Hotspur for the summer, and with a new manager to impress, it remains to be seen whether Joe Rodon will be part of Ange Postecoglou‘s plans or not.

Joe Rodon will want to play week in, week out

Speaking to The Sun about his international player, Wales boss Robert Page insisted that Rodon will be looking for regular first-team football next season even if it means leaving Spurs.

He said: “He will want to play games because I know him as a character. He’ll want to play week in, week out. That’s up to the club now.

“I’d imagine he will do a pre-season there and then they will make a decision on what’s best for him next year. If we can have a little bit of input in that then great.”

Sadly, I can’t see Joe Rodon having a future at Tottenham. He is a good player but we already have better options at the club and should hopefully be signing at least one more high-quality centre-back this summer.
