Alasdair Gold has revealed that he expects Tottenham to loan out Alfie Devine to a League One club in January.

Devine arrived at Tottenham’s academy from Wigan back in 2020 as a highly-rated young player and he has continued developing impressively in North London over the last two and a half years.

The midfielder became the youngest player to ever represent Spurs when Jose Mourinho handed him his senior debut in a FA Cup third-round tie against non-league Marine in January of last year (Mirror).

The 18-year-old was arguably Spurs’ standout player in Premier League 2 last season, scoring nine goals and providing three assists in 17 appearances (Transfermarkt).

Devine was out injured at the start of the 2022-23 season but has since fully recovered and featured regularly in Premier League 2 and UEFA Youth League over the past few months.

Football Insider reported a couple of weeks ago that Spurs have given the green light for the attacking midfielder to join an EFL club in January, and asserted that the youngster was talking to multiple clubs.

Gold has now explained that the only reason Devine was not loaned out in the summer was due to the hamstring injury he sustained, and backed the teenager to follow in Dane Scarlett’s footsteps.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “I’ve seen quite a bit of Alfie, he does look like a man among boys sometimes. With Alfie, everything is on him. He was likely to head out on loan this season, and then he picked up a really frustrating hamstring injury.

“It stopped the chances of him heading out on loan, and you would presume now that it will happen in January.

“He needs it, he needs to do what Dane’s [Scarlett] done. He needs to go to a League One team. Get him playing week in, week out, every minute possible, and I think you’ll see a very rapid development.”

Gold is spot on when he says that Devine looks like a man amongst boys when he plays for the Under-19s or the Under-21s. There is no doubt that the midfielder is ready to make the step up to senior football. Spurs have to be careful in identifying a club that plays the right style of football and one that will give the 18-year-old regular starts.
