It turns out that Alfie Devine travelled to the Brentford Community Stadium as the spare man, although the midfielder did not make the bench.
Devine, who became the youngest player to ever represent Spurs when he made his senior debut in the FA Cup third-round tie against non-league Marine in January of last year (Mirror), has been involved regularly with the first team under Antonio Conte.
Although the 18-year-old has not got minutes under his belt since the Italian took over, he has trained with the senior squad regularly and was named on the bench on multiple occasions during the second half of last season.
Alasdair Gold revealed on his YouTube channel last month that the teenager’s injury in the summer scuppered his chances of going on loan and that the former Wigan man is likely to complete a temporary move to an EFL club in January.
With Antonio Conte being without a few first-team players for the Boxing Day clash, the Italian seemingly chose to take Devine to the Brentford Community Stadium as a spare man.
The midfielder was seen arriving at the ground with the rest of the Spurs squad in the video posted on the club’s Twitter handle ahead of kick-off:

I was not surprised that Harvey White was named on the bench over Alfie Devine, given how well White had performed in the friendly against Nice and the praise he received from Conte after the game. However, it is worth pointing out that White is three years older than Devine, and the latter’s ceiling is certainly much higher than the former’s.
