Wales boss Robert Page has claimed rumoured Tottenham target Brennan Johnson had a chance to leave Nottingham Forest in January but decided against the move.
Johnson has been on fire for Forest this season, registering 12 goals and five assists across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).
The attacking midfielder’s performances have been a crucial factor in the club’s push for promotion from the Championship this season.
It was reported in December that Spurs were one of the several top-flight sides to hold an interest in the 20-year-old (The Sun).
It later emerged that Forest had slapped a £20m price tag on the youngster’s head in January, which put off interested clubs from pursuing the player (Sky Sports).
The Sun claimed last month that Johnson would leave the City Ground in the summer if Forest fail to win promotion to the Premier League, with the youngster valued at around £14m.
Page has now revealed that Johnson decided against a move in January as he wanted regular game time under his belt.
The Wales boss told The Independent: “Brennan could potentially have had a move in January.
“But he decided to stay because he’s at a club where he was going to play and enjoy his football. That speaks volumes about him. He didn’t go chasing the money.”
Spurs Web Opinion
As things stand, Nottingham Forest look unlikely to be promoted to the Premier League, and so, Johnson could be on the move in the summer.
While Tottenham certainly need a number eight in the summer to give Conte more flexibility, the North Londoners might prefer to go after a more tried and tested option than the 20-year-old.
