Brennan Johnson has given his first interview since becoming a Tottenham Hotspur player, and has spoken of how excited he is to play for the club, and his hopes of emulating Gareth Bale.

The young Welshman signed for Spurs from Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day. The deal to bring Brennan Johnson to North London cost a reported £47.5m (Sky Sports).

Tottenham had been courting Johnson throughout the summer as they looked to fill the void left behind by Harry Kane since his move to Bayern Munich. Despite competition from Brentford, Spurs finally got their man in the dying embers of the transfer window.

Johnson becomes the ninth signing of the Ange Postecoglou era at Spurs. It is hoped the 22-year-old will provide competition for Dejan Kulusevski down the right-hand side of the Tottenham attack.

Brennan Johnson wants to push Spurs forward

Speaking with the club website for the first time as a Spurs player, Johnson revealed how impressed he has been with what he’s seen from the team so far this season.

He said: “It’s a dream come true to play for a club of this stature. The fans are unbelievable. The manager has come in and the players have got behind him. I think at this time, this was the perfect decision for me.

“I watched the game against Bournemouth and against Brentford on the opening day, and the style of play has been incredible… it’s something I wanted to be involved in.”

On what he can offer the team, Johnson added: “I think I’m a player who tries to excite the fans. I’m very direct. I’m very fast. I try to get the ball as far up as I can and try and get some goals and assists. But at the end of the day I just want to work hard for the team.”

It seems Johnson has ambitions of replicating the kind of success another Welshman, Gareth Bale, had at Spurs, too: “Having played with him for Wales and seeing how he operates, I’ll take whatever I can from his career. He’s done it all, especially at Spurs… I’m just hoping I can have a similar career.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m really excited by this signing and I reckon Brennan Johnson will fit in perfectly at this club. He seems like a really good guy who’s ready to work hard for the team, and he sounds ready to step up to this next level now.
