Former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan, has urged Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to snub a move to Tottenham and join Everton instead.
Tottenham reportedly tried to sign the Southampton star during the January transfer window (Sky Sports) and have been backed to return for the midfielder’s services this summer (The Telegraph).
The 24-year-old, who has been a near ever-present in the Saints midfield since moving to the South Coast, recently admitted that he has informed Southampton of his desire to play at a higher level (Sport 1).
Football Insider reported that Tottenham had made the Denmark international their number one midfield target this summer, while The Athletic revealed that Everton are also keen on landing the former Bayern Munich man.
Whelan insisted that a move to Everton would be an attractive proposition for Hojbjerg since the Toffees are on the up under Carlo Ancellotti. Not only this, but the Southampton star is more likely to play regularly at Goodison Park over Morgan Schneiderlin.
Reacting to the speculation over Hojbjerg’s future, Whelan told Football Insider: “They (Tottenham and Everton) are both desirable football clubs.
“Everton are very up and coming now. Ancelotti will have a full pre-season ahead of next year, so they will be exciting. Who does not want to work under him?
“Everton would be a better option because there are players there such as Morgan Schneiderlin who will be moved on.
“He has not done enough and Ancelotti has had enough time to look at players now. He knows who he wants at the football club.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Hojbjerg would walk into our starting line up since we don’t have an out and out defensive midfielder in the squad, especially since Dier has transitioned to centre-back. The Southampton star seems pretty ambitious as well and I cannot see him picking Everton over us if we are interested in him.
