Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has singled out Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Harry Kane when discussing attackers at the World Cup with BBC Sport.
Drogba scored 164 goals in 381 appearances for Chelsea during his time in England (Transfermarkt), and is widely considered one of the greatest strikers to ever grace the Premier League.
It’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about what makes a good forward, then. And Spurs striker Harry Kane was mentioned in his rundown of the players he is enjoying watching at the 2022 World Cup.
Kane has been in fine form so far this tournament, contributing three assists in the group stages and finally registering his first goal at this year’s competition in the 3-0 win against Senegal last night (Transfermarkt).
Though there are some who criticise Kane, the 29-year-old is more often praised by fans, pundits, and former players for his goalscoring ability, his all-round understanding of the game, and incredible range of passing.
Drogba is a big fan of Kane, it seems. Despite the England captain failing to score in the group stages, Drogba has praised what Kane had brought to the tournament ahead of his goal against Senegal this week.
He said (BBC Sport): “England have Harry Kane, who I love to I watch.”
There are plenty of people who think Kane should play higher up the pitch, but Drogba enjoys seeing the Spurs star drop deeper. The lack of goals for Kane in England’s opening three games was not cause for concern for Drogba.
He said: “We are supposed to score goals, so when that doesn’t happen people think there’s a problem – like with, say, Harry Kane at the start of this World Cup.
“I disagree. We all know Kane is a proven goalscorer and a guy who will destroy goalkeepers if you put him in the box, but I love what he is doing for England.
“When I see him coming deep and being so involved in the game, holding the ball and releasing it, I love it. He is really smart, and he does so much good work for the team.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I’ve said it before, but there’s absolutely no reason Kane should revert to being a simple poacher when his game is so well-rounded. He gets plenty of goals despite dropping deep and is clearly proving he can be one of the best providers for his teammates, too. It’s nice to hear such a celebrated striker like Drogba recognising this ability.
