According to La Repubblica (13/06/23 as relayed by ClubDoria46 and Sport Witness), Fabio Paratici is now advising Sampdoria owner Andrea Radrizzani on some big decisions regarding structural changes at the Italian club.

Fabio Paratici’s 18-month stint as Tottenham’s managing director of football came to an abrupt end back in April when he resigned from his position after losing an appeal in Italy against his 30-month ban from the game.

Although Tottenham have hired a new manager in the form of Ange Postecoglou, they are yet to fill the vacancy left by the Italian’s departure.

Paratici is still working despite Tottenham exit

La Repubblica have now revealed that Paratici is giving his input to Radrizzani regarding who should occupy the senior roles at Sampdoria following the club’s relegation to Serie B.

The Italian businessman has agreed to sell his shares in Leeds United to 49ers Enterprises (The Athletic) and completed a takeover of the relegated Italian club recently (Daily Mail).

La Repubblica explain that Radrizzani is now in the process of deciding who to hire as the club’s manager and sporting director, and he met with Paratici on Monday to discuss the same.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Paratici cannot work anywhere in an official capacity due to his ban, I am sure that he will be keeping himself busy by working on various projects unofficially as it would be difficult for a workaholic like him to switch off from football completely.

In fact, the Italian will also likely be in constant touch with Daniel Levy, giving his input on the club’s various decisions.

Harry Winks has confirmed that he will not be signing for Sampdoria on a permanent basis by taking to social media to thank the Italian club and wish them well ahead of his return to Tottenham.

It was a season to forget for Sampdoria who have been relegated to Serie B after finishing rock bottom of the table with just 19 points from 38 games.

Harry Winks

Winks himself endured a frustrating start to the campaign as he did not kick a ball for the first half of the season due to ankle issues.

However, not only has the midfielder managed to stay injury free since January but he has also got consistent game time under his belt and has been one of the Italian side’s most consistent performers.

No Sampdoria move for Harry Winks

The England international will perhaps be hoping that his performances in Genoa over the last few months are enough to attract plenty of suitors this summer but the one thing that seems clear is that Sampdoria will not be exercising the £20m option to buy the 27-year-old permanently.

After playing his final game for the club against Napoli on Sunday, Winks took to Instagram to post the following message:

Spurs Web Opinion

The chances of Winks resurrecting his Spurs career do seem low and conventional wisdom would suggest that he would be one of the players who are shipped out as part of the club’s mass clear-out this summer.

However, there is no doubt that the England international has the technical quality and engine to play in Postecoglou’s system.

If the Australian can give him the freedom to make mistakes in possession and be brave (which Mourinho and Conte clearly did not), there is a chance that his best can be unlocked.

SampNews24 have waxed lyrical about Harry Winks’ performances over the last few months but suggest that Sampdoria would not be able to keep the midfielder beyond the end of the season, given their current predicament.

Winks missed the entirety of the first half of the campaign due to an ankle injury but the midfielder has not looked back since returning to full fitness, having been Sampdoria’s most consistent performer over the last couple of months.

Harry Winks

With regular game time under his belt, the 27-year-old is showing glimpses of the kind of potential we saw from him at Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino.

SampNews24 have now described Winks as the Serie A club’s ‘best signing of the season’, even though they concede that his future lies away from Genoa.

This is because Sampdoria do not have an option to buy Winks permanently and are currently staring at the prospect of relegation to Serie B, sitting 11 points from safety.

So, even though the England international is thought to have enjoyed his time at Genoa, he is expected to return to Spurs this summer.

The publication describes Sampdoria’s inability to negotiate the renewal of a loan or a permanent deal for Winks as a ‘real pity’.

Spurs Web Opinion

The style of football in Serie A suits Winks as he is getting more time on the ball in the middle of the park.

I would expect plenty of Serie A clubs to show interest in the 27-year-old this summer, given how well he has performed in a struggling side over the last few months.

However, since returning to action in January, the England international has established himself as a regular in the Serie A club’s starting eleven and has been one of their most consistent performers.

The Sun state that there is no obligation to buy in Sampdoria’s loan deal for Winks, which means that they would have to enter into negotiations with Spurs if they wish to sign the player permanently.

However, it is explained that even if the 27-year-old wanted to complete a permanent move to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, the Italian club simply would not be able to afford a deal as they are now at risk of going bankrupt.

In addition, Sampdoria look certain to go down this season, which further diminishes the possibility of them swooping for Winks.

The Sun claim that Winks will thus return to Spurs this summer and assert that irrespective of who the new manager at the North London club is, he is likely to be on the move again.

This all comes despite Football Insider reporting this week that Sampdoria were interested in paying their £22m clause to sign Winks permanently.

Spurs Web Opinion

Winks will enter the final year of his contract at Spurs this June. So, the Lilywhites would have to sell the midfielder permanently.

Given the level of performances he has produced for Sampdoria over the last few months, there will likely be some interest from the Serie A for the 27-year-old this summer.

According to sources at Football Insider, Sampdoria are ready to make Harry Winks’ loan move a permanent one, but it remains to be seen whether the player actually wants to stay there.

Winks had been with Tottenham Hotspur for his entire career, developing through the club’s academy and youth teams before becoming a first-team regular.

He has amassed 203 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring five goals and registering six assists (Transfermarkt).

The midfielder was pushed to the peripheries of the Spurs squad under Antonio Conte and eventually the decision was made to send Winks on loan to Sampdoria for the season.

Injury issues had kept Winks out of action for much of the season, but he has recovered and worked his way into the team.

The 26-year-old now has 11 appearances for Sampdoria (Transfermarkt), and has impressed many with his displays.

Sampdoria are struggling however, and currently languish in 19th place in the Serie A table, ten points from safety. Nevertheless, it appears the Italian side are looking ahead to the future and are keen for Winks to be a part of that.

Sources at Football Insider suggest Samdoria would be eager to make Winks’ stay in Italy a permanent one, and the club are reportedly willing to pay £22 million to make it happen.

It is believed that this is the fee agreed in Winks’ loan deal and thus would activate a full transfer.

Despite this, it is thought Winks himself is “not yet 100% sold on staying at Sampdoria.” The report claims the player is likely to “evaluate all of his options ahead of a final decision in the off-season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Sampdoria get relegated, which looks very likely, I cannot see Winks committing to a permanent move there.

I do wonder, depending on who takes over at Spurs, whether players like Winks will be keen to come back and try to establish themselves in North London once more.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has taken to Instagram to release a statement to clarify comments that he had made an in an interview with the Italian media.

The midfielder found himself frozen out of Antonio Conte’s plans at Tottenham at the start of the season having been overlooked for the club’s pre-season tour of South Korea and subsequent friendlies and instead was one of four players who were told to train away from the rest of the first-team (Evening Standard).

Winks was quoted as telling the Gazzetta dello Sport.: “I can only focus on the next match, but I am proud to have made this choice. Nobody from Tottenham has contacted me, not even the coach. I was and am fully focusing on Sampdoria.”

The England international has a long-standing association with Tottenham having been at the club for over 20 years after joining as the academy system as a five-year old and has now tried to rectify the situation.

He has now insisted that his comments regarding a lack of contact from Tottenham were in relation to his fate for next season with the 27-year-old under contract in noth London until the summer of 2024 (transfermarkt).

Winks said in his Instagram story (16/3/23): ” I just wanted to clarify my comments about no contact from Spurs were in regards to plans for next season.

“There are still plenty of games left this season for both Sampdoria and Spurs and this has to be the full focus for both.

“Having been at Spurs since the age of 5 I have nothing but respect for everyone at the Club.”

Winks’ loan spell at Sampdoria had turned into a nightmare for the first half of the 2022-23 season, with an ankle injury keeping him out of action but has since returned to action following surgery to be a regular in the starting eleven for the Serie A strugglers.

Sampdoria are reported to have a £22million option to make Winks’ loan deal permanent in the summer, however, this could hinge on retaining their top flight status as they currently battle against relegation to Serie B (Express).

SpursWeb Opinion

Winks has had a frustrating last couple of years having gone from holding down a place in the England squad to barely getting a loan deal out of the club in January.  Despite the above statement, he should have thought twice about commenting about next season and instead focus on helping to keep Sampdoria up.

Whether he could have a future post-Conte remains to be seen, but if so, he needs to rediscover his forward-thinking game rather than the sideways/backwards play which frustrated many towards the end.

They are 12 points from safety and it seems inevitable that Winks’ loan spell will end with Sampdoria’s relegation from the Italian top flight.

Despite this, the man himself has received some positive reviews since returning from injury in January following surgery on his troublesome ankle (Daily Mail).

In fact, Winks only made his debut for Sampdoria in the second half of the season due to his ankle problems, and has thanked the club for the patience and care they showed him during that time.

The Spurs academy graduate has started and played all 90 minutes for Sampdoria in every game since his debut on January 16th.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I feel indebted to Sampdoria.

“I have regret, first of all because the club has always remained by my side and has always given me support, on and off the pitch.

“It was important to allow me to solve the problems with my ankle.

“There are fantastic people here, as are the fans, with a strong sense of belonging.

“I can only be grateful to the club. There have been many changes in the workforce since September, but there has never been a lack of support among us.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I can’t help but wonder what would happen if Pochettino returned to the club this summer, with Harry Winks still on the books. Or what would have happened if Dele was only out on loan. Would Poch look to his old guard or would he want a clean slate?

Harry Winks, who is on loan with Serie A side Sampdoria for the rest of the season, has claimed that no one from Tottenham has contacted him during his spell away from North London.

However, Winks fell out of favour under Antonio Conte in North London and subsequently joined Sampdoria on loan last summer.

Unfortunately, it took until January for the midfielder to actually make his debut for his new club due to an ankle injury and eventual surgery.

Despite so much time on the sidelines and Sampdoria’s woeful form this season, Winks has actually impressed on the pitch and received glowing reviews (Daily Mail).

In a recent interview, Winks admitted that he is not sure where his future lies, despite being scheduled to return from loan to Spurs in the summer.

He said (Gazzetta dello Sport): “I have a loan contract until June. I’m satisfied with this experience.

“I don’t know what my future will be after June and I don’t even think about it now.

“I’m only looking at the next match, but I was pleased to have made this choice last year, I’m proud of it.”

Asked whether Antonio Conte has contacted him, Winks added: “No one from Tottenham has contacted me, not even the manager.

“I was and remain totally focused on Sampdoria.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Winks could have done a job for Spurs this season, especially after the injuries to Bentancur and Bissouma.

However, I suspect even though Conte likely wanted to keep him for squad depth, Winks would have pushed for a move in order to get regular football.

It has not been a positive week for Harry Winks, his Sampdoria teammates or anyone at the club as a severed pig’s head was delivered to the training ground over the weekend, BBC Sport have revealed.

After missing the entirety of the first part of the campaign through injury, Winks has enjoyed an excellent month and a half from a personal point of view, with the midfielder getting regular starts under his belt and impressing for the Serie A club.

Although things are looking up for the on-loan Spurs star, Sampdoria have still struggled to get results with any sort of consistency.

Dejan Stankovic’s men are rooted to be bottom of the Serie A table and need to start picking up wins soon if they are to have any hope of preserving their top-flight status.

BBC Sport have now reported that a severed pig’s head was delivered to the headquarters of the Italian club on Saturday on the back of their loss against Bologna.

The package was reportedly addressed to former club president Massimo Ferrero and current vice-president Antonio Romei, with a note warning “the next heads will be yours”.

Sampdoria called it a “serious act of intimidation” and confirmed that the police had been notified.

The report adds that a bullet had been delivered to the club’s offices in January with more threats.

Spurs Web Opinion

The police should certainly be taking this seriously and look to apprehend the perpetrators. It is pitiful that some idiots send death threats over football.

Although Harry Winks is playing well at the moment, it is not ideal for the 26-year-old to at such a toxic environment at the moment, with Sampdoria looking destined to go down.

However, the midfielder will certainly not be lacking any motivation as he would know that he needs to continue performing well to put himself in the shop window in the summer and get back to the levels he showed under Mauricio Pochettino.

Harry Winks has admitted that he was left with no choice but to ask to leave Tottenham last summer as he no longer felt wanted at his boyhood club.

Winks is arguably the biggest success story from Tottenham’s academy since Harry Kane’s emergence, with the midfielder breaking into the first-team and going on to represent the Lilywhites over 200 times.

However, the 27-year-old found himself falling further and further down the pecking order since Mauricio Pochettino left the club in 2019 and it did not come as a surprise when he departed Spurs on loan last summer.

The England international admitted that while he had some amazing years at Tottenham, his decision to join Sampdoria was fairly straightforward last summer.

He told The Times: “Everyone, me and the club, we both knew it was time to part. The situation was clear. I told the club I wanted to go and play regularly. I wasn’t happy just being on the bench and not getting minutes.

“Every time I played, even if I did well I would be out the next game, and it’s really difficult to play your best football like that.

“I said to the club, with no animosity, ‘I want to play regularly. I’ve had some amazing years at Spurs but I want to go and get my confidence and fitness back. I need that to show my qualities again’.

“I spoke to Sampdoria, the manager, the director of football, and one thing that really attracted me was historically they’re a huge club.

“The main driver was I wanted to play for a team that wanted me, that respected me enough and wanted to commit to me in that sense. I wanted to feel wanted and appreciated because in the last couple of years it was difficult at Spurs. I didn’t have that feeling.”

Winks endured an injury nightmare in his first few months in Italy, with an ankle injury keeping him out of action for the entirety of the first half of the campaign.

The midfielder only made his debut for the Serie A club last month but has seemingly put his fitness woes behind him, having started every single one of the club’s last four matches.

The on-loan Tottenham man described the first part of the 2022-23 campaign as the ‘toughest’ time of his career and expressed his determination to repay Sampdoria for the faith they have shown in him.

He added: “Normally I’d say there weren’t any doubts, because you always think you’re going to be fine, but this time there were. It was one of the toughest times in my career.

“You’re moving abroad, trying to get settled in, at a new club, and the main reason is to play football. That’s the one constant you have, playing the game. But instead, you’re answering questions about why the ankle isn’t getting better.

“I feel like I let the club down in that sense. I’m not sure if there were discussions between Sampdoria and Tottenham but it could have been an easy decision to send me back and say let’s leave it. I said from the start, I don’t want to leave, I want to push to be fit for the second half of the season.

“And credit to the club, they stuck by me. That’s why I feel obligated now to give everything. I want to repay the faith when I get the chance. It was only my fifth game since May so it’s going to take time to get back to my best. I’ve got that platform now. I believe I’m playing well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have always felt that Winks would be more suited to playing in Serie A or La Liga than the Premier League since he would get more time on the ball in Italy and Spain.

If the 27-year-old continues impressing over the next couple of months, I can potentially see some top Serie A clubs viewing for his signature next summer.

There is also a small possibility of Winks’ Spurs career potentially being handed a lifeline in the event that Pochettino replaced Conte at the end of the season.

Harry Winks has opened up on the mental struggles he faced when he was out injured during the first half of the campaign and admitted that he is over the moon to now finally be getting regular minutes under his belt.

When Winks completed a loan move to Sampdoria last summer, the midfielder would have hoped to get his career back on track after his struggles to get game time at Tottenham over the previous couple of years.

However, the England international was sidelined with an ankle injury for the entire first part of the season before eventually deciding to have surgery to fix the problem back in November.

The 27-year-old finally made his long-awaited debut for Sampdoria last month and has since gone on to make five appearances, having started the last four matches (Tranfermarkt).

The on-loan Spurs man has been growing in confidence with each game and delivered his best display so far in the 0-0 draw with Inter Milan on Monday.

Speaking after the draw against the Nerazzurri, Winks told The Daily Mail: “It has taken me a while. I’ve been out for six months.

“Not training and then coming in for a session and then having to go back out with the ankle, it was a nightmare so to come back and feel good, like I do, to feel 100 per cent is all I wanted really.

“It will take time to get back to full match fitness. That’s four full 90 minutes in a row and it’s what I need to build fitness and get back to form. Sampdoria has shown massive faith in me.

“They signed me to play and for the first half of the season it was really difficult for me and the club but they stuck with me and I want to repay that faith and appreciation they’ve shown me. Every time I get on the pitch I want to do everything I can to help save this club, to keep this club in Serie A.

“It’s a new team but everyone’s integrating slowly. We’re going in the right direction and I love it. I enjoy playing for a team with so much history. It’s a huge club and you can feel that.

“Everybody knows it’s a difficult time at the moment, but every time I get an opportunity I will play as hard as I can because I’m grateful for the love and respect they’ve shown me since I first arrived.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I always thought that Winks would thrive in  Serie A since he will get more time on the ball and the 27-year-old is now starting to show his qualities.

Even if Sampdoria do not manage to stay up, there is likely to be plenty of interest in the England international from Italian clubs in the summer if he maintains the same standard of performance over the coming months.

In a piece for the Daily Mail, journalist Matt Barlow has heaped praise on Harry Winks and suggests the Tottenham Hotspur-owned player could be the key to helping Sampdoria stave off relegation from Serie A this season.

Winks had been with Tottenham for his whole career until this season, racking up 203 appearances and scoring five goals for the club (Transfermarkt). However, since Antonio Conte’s arrival, the midfielder found himself on the peripheries of the squad and struggling for game time.

The 27-year-old moved to Italian side Sampdoria on a season-long loan, but a severe ankle injury left him unable to train or play for the club until recently. He is playing now though, and the Italian press are very impressed by what they have seen (Gazzetta dello Sport).

Sampdoria are currently in 19th place in the Serie A table, eight points adrift of safety. But, it is thought by some that Winks could be the key to helping them stay in the division.

That’s the opinion of Barlow at least, who said “Harry Winks was cool and composed, perfectly at home in the heart of this Sampdoria team,” after seeing Sampdoria pull off a surprise draw against high-flying Inter Milan.

The praise didn’t stop there, as Winks was commended for being “hugely influential,” and it has even been suggested that the Englishman could be the “unlikely saviour” for struggling Sampdoria.

Winks was called an “intelligent pass master” in the report, and was celebrated for his hard work during the draw.

Spurs Web Opinion

It makes me very happy to see Harry Winks getting such high praise upon his return to action over in Italy and it sounds like he’s doing a great job. Hopefully, he can keep Sampdoria up, as that would be a really nice story for him and the club after such a difficult start to the loan spell.

Harry Winks has been speaking to the press (via Football Daily) about his time on loan with Sampdoria, and has discussed whether he sees a future for himself at Tottenham Hotspur.

A Tottenham boy through and through, Winks came through the club’s academy and youth teams before breaking into the senior side in November 2014. He has gone on to amass 203 appearances for Spurs, with five goals and six assists to his name (Transfermarkt).

Since Antonio Conte’s arrival at the club, however, Winks found himself pushed to the peripheries of the Spurs squad and was deemed surplus to requirements in the summer. No permanent move materialised, but Winks did make the switch to Serie A side Sampdoria on loan for the season.

It’s been a difficult season for Winks though, who has missed the majority of the campaign due to an ankle injury. He’s finally playing for the Italian side now though, and the press out there have been impressed by his displays so far (Gazzetta dello Sport).

Now, Winks has been asked about his time in Italy and his plans for the future, with discussion to be had over whether he even returns to Spurs at all at the end of the season.

He said: “I’m taking it game by game, because you have to in football. With the injury I had earlier in the season, it’s so difficult to think too far ahead because you never really know what’s coming round the corner. So I just take it day by day, week by week.

“At the end of the season, I want to be in a positive situation with the club here. Hopefully, we can stay up and have some great results. On a personal note, to play as many games as possible and just get back to that confidence and just enjoying playing.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Winks is understandably cautious when speaking about the future, and after the injury he had, I’m sure he’s just delighted to be playing again.

I can’t see a future for him at Spurs, to be honest, but as he says, the main thing is focusing on the task at hand with Sampdoria before assessing his options in the summer.

Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport has praised Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks after the player finally made his long-awaited debut for Sampdoria, where he is spending the season on loan.

Winks had spent his entire career with Tottenham until this season, racking up 203 appearances for the North London club (Transfermarkt). Since Antonio Conte’s arrival, however, the English midfielder found himself on the fringes of the first team.

It was decided in the summer that Winks would move on, but with no permanent move materialising, the 26-year-old headed out to Italy for a season-long loan spell with Sampdoria. The move hadn’t quite gone to plan though, with an ankle injury keeping Winks out for the majority of the season.

Until recently, Winks had failed to make an appearance for the Serie A side, and it was thought January would be a ‘crucial month’ in determining whether he stays in Italy or returns to Tottenham (Club Doria 64).

Now though, the central midfielder has finally made his Sampdoria debut and things are looking up for Winks. He may only have been on the pitch for 28 minutes against Empoli on Monday, but it was enough to get the Italian media singing his praises.

Gazzetta dello Sport were clearly pleased that Winks had made it “out of the tunnel” and looks to have put his “complicated months” behind him. The outlet liked what they saw, and heralded Winks as being a “player of another category” after a dynamic cameo display.

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m absolutely buzzing for Harry Winks to finally have made it onto the pitch for Sampdoria and to have been received so positively. He may have fallen out of favour at Spurs but Winks is a player who gave everything for us and loved doing so, and we should be supporting his efforts in Italy. Here’s hoping he can start the next game and continue this development.

Harry Winks has taken to social media to express his delight at finally making his debut for Sampdoria after enduring a tough time of it so far this season.

When Winks completed a loan move to Sampdoria last summer, the midfielder would have hoped to get his career back on track after his struggles to get game time at Tottenham over the previous couple of years.

However, the 2022/23 campaign has been one to forget so far for the England international, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury for the entire first part of the season before finally deciding to have surgery to fix the problem back in November.

After completing his rehabilitation, the 26-year-old finally made his debut for Sampdoria on Monday away at Empoli, getting around 30 minutes of game time under his belt after replacing Bruno Amione in the 62nd minute.

The Blucerchiati fell to yet another defeat as Tyronne Ebuehi’s 55th-minute strike proving the difference, with Dejan Stankovic’s men seemingly having a mountain to climb to preserve their Serie A status.

Here’s how Winks reacted on Instagram after getting his first minutes of the season:

‘After a very tough 6 months injured. Finally making my debut for this club was amazing. Still shocked at the referee’s decision but as always the fans were unbelievable and will continue to fight for the rest of the season.’

Spurs Web Opinion

While a lot has been written and said about Dele Alli’s steep decline, Winks’ career trajectory has not been too dissimilar. Until around 2019, it seemed like he could evolve into one of the best midfielders in the world and become one of England’s most important players.

However, a combination of injury issues and managerial upheavals at Spurs have seen the 26-year-old regress considerably. Hopefully, he can remain fit until the end of the season and show what he can do over the coming months, thus putting himself in the shop window ahead of the summer.

Thankfully for the 26-year-old, the operation seems to have had the desired effect and the mid-season break for the World Cup has given him some time to work towards full fitness.

After making the matchday squad for the first time this season in the clash against Napoli last week, Winks got his first minutes of the season in Sampdoria’s loss away at Empoli yesterday.

The England international got around 30 minutes of game time under his belt after replacing Bruno Amione in the 62nd minute, with Tyronne Ebuehi’s 55th-minute strike giving the home side all three points.

The defeat leaves Sampdoria in deep trouble, with Dejan Stankovic’s men sitting in 19th place with just nine points from 18 matches but Winks’ return to action is perhaps a small consolation for the Blucerchiati.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given how poorly Sampdoria are faring this season, Stankovic appears to have little choice but to throw Winks into the deep end and hope that the midfielder can help the club rescue their season. If nothing else, the on-loan Tottenham man now has the chance to put himself in the shop window ahead of the summer.

According to a report from SampNews24, Tottenham Hotspur could be set to renegotiate the terms of the loan agreement for Harry Winks with Serie A side Sampdoria.

Despite coming through the Tottenham academy and making 203 appearances for the first team (Transfermarkt), Winks had found himself on the fringes of Antonio Conte’s squad and was allowed to leave the club in the summer.

Harry Winks

Marc Atkins/Getty Images

The loan move to Sampdoria hasn’t quite gone to plan, though, and an ankle injury has kept Winks out of action all season. The 26-year-old had surgery back in November (TuttoMercatoWeb) and is on the road to recovery now.

Reports from close to the club suggested January would be a ‘crucial month’ for Winks in his recovery, and would ultimately decide whether he stays with Sampdoria for the rest of the season or returns to Spurs (Club Doria 64).

Winks is close to a return, though, and even made the bench for Sampdoria on Sunday. He didn’t get any minutes against Napoli, but the fact the Englishman is back among the substitutes surely bodes well for his chances of stepping onto the pitch soon.

Now, the latest report claims Sampdoria are keen to rethink the agreement for Winks’ loan spell, with a view to renegotiating the portion of the player’s wages they are responsible for.

Winks is currently on a £91,000-per-week deal, and Sampdoria want Spurs to cover a higher percentage of that if he is to stay with the club.

Sampdoria are not believed to be looking to change the option-to-buy part of the initial deal, however, which would see them able to keep Winks permanently for a fee of £22 million (Fabrizio Romano).

Spurs Web Opinion

I would say it’s only fair that Spurs cover more of Winks’ wage, given how little Sampdoria have gotten out of this deal so far. I’m really hoping he can get on the pitch soon and have a good second half of the season to put the injury issue behind him.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks, currently on loan at Sampdoria, has sent a message to fans on Instagram after making the bench for the Italian side for the first time.

Winks is a product of the Tottenham Hotspur academy, and, having developed through the youth teams with the club, has gone on to make 203 appearances for the first team (Transfermarkt).

Harry Winks

Marc Atkins/Getty Images

Early promise in his career saw Winks become a mainstay in the Spurs midfield, and even led to him accruing ten caps for England along the way (Transfermarkt).

In the last 18 months, however, Winks has seen himself fall into the peripheries of the Tottenham squad under Antonio Conte, and the decision was made to loan him out to Serie A side Sampdoria in the summer.

Unfortunately, due to a longstanding injury, Winks has been unable to make his debut for the Italian outfit. Winks had surgery on his ankle injury back in November (TuttoMercatoWeb) and has been on the road to recovery ever since.

Reports from Italy suggest this month is a ‘crucial month’ in determining whether Winks stays with Sampdoria for the duration of the season or if his loan spell is cut short (Club Doria 64).

Progress has been made, however, with Winks taking his place on the bench for the game against Napoli on Sunday. After the game, Winks shared a message on his socials.

He said: “After a long and very difficult time injured, was good to finally be with the team last night.”

Winks didn’t make it onto the pitch sadly, but the fact he is among the substitutes is a good sign that he will feature for Sampdoria soon, hopefully.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s brilliant news that Winksy has made it onto the bench, and now hopefully he can get some minutes under his belt and make an impact to secure his future with Sampdoria for the rest of the campaign at least. It would be such a shame after all this if his loan spell was ended.

According to Club Doria 46, this month is going to be crucial for Harry Winks as he tries to salvage his loan spell with Sampdoria and avoid being sent back to Tottenham Hotspur without ever making an appearance for the Italian side.

Winks, a Tottenham boy born and raised, had enjoyed a relatively successful career with the North London club. Having progressed through the academy and youth teams, Winks has now made a total of 203 appearances for Spurs (Transfermarkt).

Antonio Conte Harry Winks

Though he has had some fairly impressive performances for the Lilywhites over the years, and even managed to rack up ten appearances and a goal for England (Transfermarkt), Winks’ career has stalled over the last 18 months.

Becoming a peripheral player in Antonio Conte’s squad, Winks was offered a way out during the summer and ultimately joined Serie A side Sampdoria on a season-long loan.

Unfortunately, due to an ongoing ankle injury, Winks has not featured for Sampdoria in a competitive game all season. The 26-year-old underwent surgery on the issue in November, and was expected to be out for a couple of months (TuttoMercatoWeb).

A report from SampNews24 at the end of December suggested that Winks’ recovery was going well and suggested he could make his debut for Sampdoria at the end of this month.

Now, the latest from Club Doria 46 highlights just how important January will be for Winks, describing this as what “could be a crucial month” in his battle to stay in Italy.

By the sounds of it, his condition is improving, but at present, Winks is “training to still guarantee himself a future” at the club.

Apparently, “between now and the end of January,” Sampdoria will make a decision on whether to “send him back to Tottenham.” As for Winks himself, it’s believed the player is looking to “repay Sampdoria for their trust.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I hope Sampdoria stick with Winksy and give him a chance to get on the pitch and show what he can do. It sounds like his situation is improving all the time, and I’m confident he will be a success out there once he’s fully fit.

SampNews24 have revealed that Harry Winks could make his debut for Sampdoria as early as January.

Winks has endured an extremely frustrating six months since completing a loan switch to Sampdoria in the summer, with an ankle injury keeping him sidelined.

The 26-year-old eventually decided to have surgery last month to fix the issue and was initially expected to be out of action for a couple of months (TuttoMercatoWeb).

However, there have been some positive updates regarding the midfielder over recent weeks, with ClubDoria46 reporting recently that he has started training separately from his teammates.

SampNews24 have now also suggested that Winks’ recovery is ahead of schedule, with the publication stating that his rehabilitation time is ‘getting shorter’.

The report explains that the England international will play no part in the friendlies over the coming weeks and will spend his Christmas holidays with his family in London before returning to Italy to ‘continue his treatment’.

SampNews24 assert that barring any setbacks, the on-loan Tottenham man could make his Sampdoria debut sometime between January and February.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is fantastic news as Winks must be chomping at the bit to get some minutes under the belt after what must have been an extremely frustrating few months. The 26-year-old will take time to work up to full match fitness but he is more than capable of leaving his mark on the Serie A in the final few months of the campaign.
