Winks managed to put his injury troubles behind him during the second half of last season and excelled on loan at Sampdoria but was not able to save the Serie A club from relegation.

Some eyebrows were raised when the Tottenham academy graduate decided to drop down to the Championship in the summer, with Leicester paying £10m for his services. 

The decision has proven to be the right one for Winks, and for Leicester, as the 27-year-old has thrived at the King Power Stadium, having arguably been the best player across the English second-tier so far this season.

The former Spurs star’s commanding performances in the middle of the park are arguably one of the main reasons that Leicester are currently five points clear at the top of the table.

Winks opened his account for Leicester in front of goal on Saturday, with his brilliant curved 80th-minute effort giving the table toppers all three points at Loftus Road.

Speaking after his side’s 2-1 win over QPR, Maresca told BBC Sport about the midfielder: “Harry Winks has been a main player for us, for the way he behaves on and off the ball, trying to learn new things every day.

“When I met the club for the first time, he was the first name [I said] because I know him from Tottenham and he was in Italy last year. With this idea of football, Harry is perfect.”

Could Harry Winks get another England call-up?

Maresca believes that the former Tottenham man, who has won 10 caps for England, is good enough to earn a recall to the Three Lions set-up.

When asked about Winks making it back to the international set-up, he said (via talkSPORT’s Jason Bourne): “I don’t have any doubt, Harry Winks could be a good player for an international team. He’s helping us a lot, working fantastic. He has the level to be at the top.”

The Tottenham academy graduate had struggled for consistent game time ever since Mauricio Pochettino’s exit back in 2019 and spent last season on loan at Sampdoria.

The England international admitted that he wanted to feel valued again and that he made up his mind as soon as Leicester made an approach.

Winks told The Sun: “The most important thing for me was to feel wanted again. Leicester made it clear early on in the window that they wanted me as a key player.

“The manager personally asked for me and to feel wanted by a club of this magnitude was massive. So the main driving force was feeling wanted by Enzo Maresca.”

The midfielder revealed that both he and Tottenham were clear that the time had come to part ways, and that his desire for a quick resolution to his future meant that he never spoke with the new Spurs head coach.

He continued: “I’d been at Tottenham since I was five. But over the last few years, I wasn’t playing as much as I’d like to and the style of coaches we had was not ideal for me.

“There was no animosity with the club, I had some amazing years with Spurs, and I’m so grateful for my chance there. But it was time for both of us to move on.

“I never spoke to Ange. It was all done and decided before he came in. The general consensus between me and Spurs was, ‘Let’s get this done as soon as possible’.

“I wanted to start pre-season at the new place and get as fit as I could and meet everyone. The club felt the same way and everything happened pretty quick.”

Winks also hinted that his enthusiasm for the game had dissipated due to the negative approach that recent Tottenham managers employed.

The 27-year-old added: “The way that the manager wants to play is exactly the kind of football I love. When he told me on the phone about his style and how he wants to progress with the team, it was just a no-brainer for me.

“That’s the style I had under Pochettino which I really enjoyed. All we want to do is play football with the ball and when you’re set up to not have the ball, it’s demoralising.

“That was part of the reason why I wanted to come here — because the way the manager wants to set up is an approach I can buy into.”

Winks might have actually had an outside chance of forcing himself into Postecoglou’s plans if he was part of pre-season at Tottenham as the midfielder’s characteristics suit the way the Australian wants to play.

However, having said that, it was clear that the 27-year-old needed to new challenge away from Spurs in order to revive his career, and he has taken a brave call to drop down to the Championship with Leicester to prioritise regular game time.

Harry Winks’ move to Leicester could happen this weekend

The Independent have now become the latest publication to suggest that Winks’s switch to the King Power Stadium has been fully agreed, with PA journalist George Sessions, who wrote the article taking to Twitter earlier this morning to reveal that the transfer could be confirmed this weekend.

Sessions wrote: “Harry Winks’ loan with Sampdoria officially ends today, which will allow Leicester to confirm his £10million transfer this weekend.

“Curiously he made 203 apps for #THFC – the same number Maddison made for #LCFC. A key figure under Poch, move suits everyone.”

He will depart after spending 21 years at the club and has not made a competitive appearance for Spurs since the 2021/22 season.

This is a decent move for Winks and I fully expect him to dominate the Championship if he can stay fit next season.

Offloading Winks (and the likes of Lo Celso) was always going to be straightforward for Tottenham this summer.

Ankle issues and an apparent lack of confidence which crept into his game saw him become a player who decided instead to look to pass the ball sideways or backwards, rather than looking to drive forward as he did early on.  Hopefully, he can now get his career back on track in the Championship.

It has emerged that Leicester City are keen to snap up Winks this summer, and negotiations are already thought to be underway on the deal.

The Telegraph, have claimed that new Leicester boss Maresca believes Winks “has the ability and versatility to become a key part of his squad.”

With just one year left on his current contract, it is thought Winks “will be allowed to leave” Tottenham. The report states “negotiations are understood to be under way” for the proposed switch.

This feels like the perfect deal for all parties. Winks will be a great fit for a Leicester side playing in the Championship, he will play regularly, and we will be able to finally offload a player who sadly just doesn’t have a place here anymore.

That is partly down to the glowing reviews that many heard about the 57-year-old from Celtic fans and perhaps also down to his unwavering commitment to playing high-octane, possession-based football.

O’Hara remarked that the Tottenham faithful finally have a manager in place who will stay true to the club’s ethos after enduring three years of negative football.

O’Hara thinks Ndombele and Winks will get chances

The former Spurs midfielder told Grosvenor Sport (as relayed by The Sun) about Postecoglou’s arrival: “I think it’s a good appointment. He’s won the treble at Celtic, he’s been in the game for a long time, and he’s been successful wherever he’s gone.

“I’m intrigued to see what happens – Spurs have had the big managers like Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho, but it was just defensive football. They’re top managers, but it wasn’t the Tottenham way.

“For me, I think Postecoglou is going to bring in a style of football that Tottenham fans will enjoy – fast-paced, free-flowing, in your face and high tempo.

“I think it’s what Tottenham need and it’s what the fans want. They may lose some games and they’re still going to have some bad players at the club, but at least it’s going to be more enjoyable to watch.”

O’Hara admitted that Tottenham would need to clear out some of the older heads in the squad this summer but insisted that the likes of Ndombele and Winks, who spent the 2022-23 season out on loan, could have a new lease of life under Postecoglou.

He continued: “I think Postecoglou will have a look at the players on loan – you’ve got Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks on loan, players who have been talented footballers but for whom it hasn’t worked out for, but if you look at how bad it got last year, maybe these players might actually have an opportunity to get involved.

“I think it will be a fresh start for a lot of these players, but they need to get rid of a lot of players who have been there for too long – Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris, the old heads that have been there for way too long.

“The club needs to move on from that. Spurs have been okay and sort of half successful with them, but now it’s time to move on.”

While I can understand why the club will want to make some swift decisions on who to sell, given the bloated nature of our squad, I do hope that Postecoglou gets an opportunity to assess the likes of Winks, Lo Celso and Ndombele in pre-season training before a decision is made to sell them.

Those three have suffered from the fact that we have had two managers in Mourinho and Conte who have a cautious style of play.

There is a chance that they could thrive under a coach like Postecoglou, who encourages players to be brave and is accepting of mistakes in possession.

The chances of Winks resurrecting his Spurs career do seem low and conventional wisdom would suggest that he would be one of the players who are shipped out as part of the club’s mass clear-out this summer.

However, there is no doubt that the England international has the technical quality and engine to play in Postecoglou’s system.

If the Australian can give him the freedom to make mistakes in possession and be brave (which Mourinho and Conte clearly did not), there is a chance that his best can be unlocked.

Since returning to full fitness in January, the 26-year-old has been a regular fixture in the heart of the Serie A club’s midfield and has arguably been the club’s most consistent performer.

However despite his best efforts, the England international could not prevent Sampdoria from going down.

Reports from Italy have indicated that the club’s relegation from the top flight means that they cannot afford a deal to sign Winks permanently (SampNews24).

So, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Tottenham academy graduate, who may perhaps be put on the shop window by the North London club this summer.

Brown believes that Winks will want to prove himself to the next Tottenham head coach but suggested that the 27-year-old’s days in N17 now look to be numbered.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Winks is in flux. He has not been able to convince a series of managers now that he deserves a starting place.

So, irrespective of which manager takes over in the summer, Winks looks likely to be on his way out. Given how well he has performed over the last few months, a few Italian clubs would probably explore a deal for the midfielder over the coming months.
