Ally McCoist has told TalkSport he expects Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to move on from Old Trafford, and sees the England defender as a good fit for Tottenham Hotspur.

Maguire joined Manchester United in 2019 for a reported £80 million, a world record fee for a defender (BBC Sport). The centre-back enjoyed success in his first few years at the club, but has suffered of late with poor form costing him his place in Erik ten Hag’s starting line-up.

He has made 153 appearances for Manchester United over the years (Transfermarkt), but has just nine appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils this season (Transfermarkt).

Maguire’s form at club level is in stark contrast to his performances for England, and after a strong showing at the 2022 World Cup, the 29-year-old finds himself in an odd position.

According to the Express, Maguire has been told he can leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window. Meanwhile, it was reported by TalkSport yesterday that United manager ten Hag has challenged Maguire to replicate his England form and reclaim his place at club level.

Now, pundit Ally McCoist thinks Maguire will leave the club and has highlighted Spurs as a possible destination should that happen.

McCoist said: “I think he will move. I don’t think he may move, I’ll go one further – I think he WILL move. He isn’t going to hang around – he wants to play. I don’t think there are any guarantees that he’s going to march back into the Manchester United team, not in front of Varane and Martinez.”

On where Maguire should go, McCoist added: “Well, that’s up for debate. Clearly he will want to play. Straight away off the top of my head, I’d say he’s good enough for Spurs. Arsenal? Maybe not at this moment in time.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think it’s a stretch to suggest Harry Maguire would be good enough for Spurs but not good enough for Arsenal, but I do get where McCoist is coming from. The Spurs backline is desperately in need of reinforcements, while Arsenal appear to have got their defence sorted somewhat. I know one thing, I would absolutely take Maguire at Spurs, and I think he would be a great signing given his experience and ball-playing ability.
