Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that Conor Gallagher is not good enough for Chelsea if the West London club have title ambitions next season but insisted that he would be a guaranteed starter at Tottenham.

Tottenham’s interest in Gallagher came to light last week when Football.London reported that the Lilywhites could use the 23-year-old’s desire to remain in London to their advantage and get a deal over the line.

This was followed up by an update on The Athletic’s live transfer blog (16/06, 3 pm), which suggested that Tottenham were battling Brighton and West Ham for the England international’s signature.

However, Fabrizio Romano explained on his YouTube channel (starting at 2.17) a couple of days ago that while Gallagher is on Spurs’ radar, he is not viewed as a priority signing by the club.

He added that for the moment, Ange Postecoglou’s men are focused on winning the race for James Maddison.

Gallagher good enough to start every week for Spurs

Agbonlahor believes that Spurs should snap up the Chelsea star, suggesting that he could be a key player for the North Londoners, particularly in Rodrigo Bentancur’s absence.

The pundit told Football Insider about Gallagher: “I don’t think he’s got the quality to be a regular at Chelsea, with where Chelsea want to be in the table. He’s not a midfielder who is good enough to play for a title challenger. He’s not good enough.

“But for Spurs, they’re the eighth-best team in the league – and I think he’d be a good addition to that side. He’d probably play week-in, week-out at the moment with Bentancur out injured.”

If Tottenham are the eighth-best team in the Premier League, then by Agbonlahor’s own logic, Chelsea are the twelfth-best team in the division since that is where they finished.

It is clear that Maddison is Postecoglou’s priority target for the number eight role but I would not mind us snapping up Gallagher as cover for the Leicester star as the Chelsea man could thrive in the right system.
