Jermaine Jenas did not hold back in his criticism of the Tottenham players for their performance against Bournemouth, while commenting on his confusion at why Cristian Stellini took the job only to continue Conte’s tactics.
It was another afternoon to forget for Spurs, who failed to impose themselves on the game and were happy to sit back and allow the Cherries to control possession after taking the lead in the first half.
The home side did start to throw caution to the wind in the final half an hour of the game but as they were going in search of a late winner after Arnaut Danjuma had leveled the score, they got caught out at the back, with Dango Ouattara netting a stoppage-time winner for the away side.
Cristian Stellini admitted in his post-match press conference that the players have developed a tendency to drop deep and put the blame for the loss on individual defensive mistakes rather than the tactics (Football.London).
Jenas has now accused some Spurs stars of not being brave enough on the ball and trying to hide.
The former Spurs midfielder told Match of the Day (15/04/23): “I think players were starting to hide in the game, and from a point of view where they just don’t have a plan of how-to build-up play and play through the lines.”
Referring to one clip that showed Romero giving the ball away to Jaiden Anthony near the corner flag and Porro failing to tackle him, the pundit said: “It’s shambolic defending.
“Dier should come out and press. I can’t understand why Cristian Stellini has come into this job to play exactly the same way as Antonio Conte has played.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Stellini was always going to set the team up in the same manner as Conte did.
In fact, the reason that the Italian was put in charge instead of Ryan Mason was probably so that the team has some tactical continuity, as Fabio Paratici himself explained to the official website last month.
